It’s only just dawned on me, but Bioware’s impact on the culture I cover is so significant that I happened to post an advertisement for Knights of the Old Republic (2003) just hours before the studio closed.

KotOR was incredible, and it’s not for nothing that it often tops lists of the best Star Wars games. 😎 The first time I experienced it, I watched my brother play it on the Xbox. The big reveal was brilliant. The reimagining of the Star Wars universe was brilliant. The Ebon Hawk was brilliant.

On early Xbox, if it said BioWare, I just bought it and played it. jade Empire was fantastic and sadly forgotten, KOTR, my wife and I played countless hours of Balder’s Gate, and Mass Effect…brilliance apparently doesn’t promise success.

When my bro received Mass Effect for Christmas, the game had completely flown under my radar. The prologue and the lore-filled codex motivated me to buy a 360. Mass Effect remains my personal favorite—flaws and all—for the sense of horror and impending apocalypse it evokes within a sci-fi mystery.

Dammit! That's the saddest "coming soon" I've seen. 🫠 The next hero ship looked good! What if the Normandy was sleekier?
