Whatโ€™s really amazing about vibe-coding is how people are replacing programming languages which are strictly deterministic with human speech which is highly ambiguous and expect programming to be faster and better.

The funny bit is the whole thing of how we did similar efforts multiple times in the 1950-1990s. It was like FORTRANs (and a bunch of other languages) whole reason for being created. It did work relative to older languages.

A few weeks ago, I made this meme. I think it's going to be next to the abstract in an experience report to our dean on introducing gen AI activities into our first semester course.

I look forward to the school that will emerge, likely under the name of "Prompt Engineering", which will evolve a dialect of Basic English (or something similar) whose intentional restrictions will help folks get more-predictable results from LLMs.

I'm curious to see whether that dialect becomes as formal as I expect it to become. I'm prepared to be surprised, but if I were forced to bet my own money, it would look an awful lot like COBOL.
