people’s main problem with Dario is that he’s a weirdo, and yeah, i get that. That’s what i like about him

I'd find him endearing and likable if he wasn't pushing for the most venal and stupid folks to regulate the industry. Well, that might be a bit far, but at least I'd view the x-risk worries as a quirky neurosis.

honestly the idea that AI should be free of regulation is ONLY compatible with power hungry billionaires and should be found repulsive by every other human on earth sure, too much regulation, or too early. Yes those are bad things. But i have a hard time convincing myself that Dario is wrong here

I definitely agree with that. Waiting until someone else is in office may be too late, or not change the character of the regulators in ways I care about. The current framing of the risks and possible regulations just doesn't sit well with me, because the patterns it fits look like untenable ones.

People from a weird community full of weirdos complain that a weird company in a weird industry is led by a weirdo, while failing to realise how weird that is

My problem isn’t that he’s a weirdo, it’s that the words coming out of his mouth are totally inconsistent with the actions of the company. Someone described it as “screaming that the car is headed towards a cliff while slamming the accelerator” and I think that absolutely nails it.

He's an incredibly intelligent guy and a real thinker, which is my kind of person. But the danger is that very intelligent thinkers can rationalize almost anything. Seems like his mindset is "We have to win, even at some great cost, because we're the only ones worthy to wield this power."

I think he expresses such thinking most clearly when talking about China. The good guys need to do it and win as otherwise the bad guys will. The obvious problem is that given everything going on in the US these days, including increasing state control on AI models, good vs. bad is as clear as mud.

But even on this point his thinking isn't clear at all. He says his fear about China is that an authoritarian government using AI to suppress its population. Fair enough, but Anthropic can do literally nothing to prevent that...
