InstaRig is now available for pre-order on Gumroad and the Holotype web store! If you want a one-click facial rigging solution for #blender, don't miss this one. This will be released in early November so if you pre-order now, you'll get it much cheaper, and you also won't be waiting long.

InstaRig pre-sales are going fast (plus a tip from this customer, which was a pleasant surprise). Don't miss out!

Nick Fisher@hydroxide.dev

First one gone! There's a fixed number of pre-orders so get in ASAP if InstaRig is something you can use in your modelling/rigging work. If you're unsure about the quality of the outputs, send me your mesh via e-mail or Discord and I'll run it through the pre-release version and share it with you.

Per their IPO docs, Anthropic estimates that between 5% and 7% of its revenue is from breaches of its terms (distillation, banned ML/AI work, etc).

Progress update on the new blendshape solver for Audio Lip Sync Pro. Left, ALSP drives some badly constructed ARKit blendshapes. Right, ALSP estimates blendshapes from the raw mesh via correspondence with a canonical reference & drives those blendshapes instead. Huge improvement. (Sound on)

Fibo-2.0-Editing is quite good at this task! This is after in-painting the missing areas on the head mesh and then rendering on top of the original scene. It took a lot of liberties (e.g. look at original lighting on the camera left cheek compared with this) but overall it's pretty consistent.

Bingo. I asked it to in-paint (out-paint?) the UV-unwrapped texture. No luck with any models so far, but to be fair that's probably a skill issue on my part.

Every now and again I'll try image generation models for something and I'm reminded how they all mostly suck ass.

Speculation that "Kalmia" on LLM Arena is Qwen 4 too (Kimi 3.1 might be "Kibitz")

Nick Fisher@hydroxide.dev

Rumours that Kimi K3.1 is incoming. I assume it will turn out like Kimi K3, a top-end model that noone really uses because it's too expensive.

My Codex plan lapsed a few days ago, so I've experimented with DS4.1F instead (and my annual GLM sub that is so slow I don't really bother with it any more). DS4.1F is slower + stupider than Sol. Stupider I can deal with, but slower is difficult to stomach.

FYI, OpenAI locks the currency based on your region (presumably IP-address based), with no way to change via the dashboard or manually via support. Funnily enough, for a company that some people claim reached AGI, this is *not* what their own website says.

Worse, it's actually costing me *more* than a Codex plan because I have to pay peak pricing (and that's before taking into account Codex stashed resets & credits). Right now, it's a no-brainer to stick with Codex. If I was paying off-peak pricing I'd probably be OK with DS4.1F alone.

I just saw that one of my former classmates was a barrister for Apple on this one. Reminds me why I never went down that path - I'm far too opinionated to be able to sit there and come up with legal reasons to justify why Apple behaves the way it does.

I have a lot of gripes about Australia, but one thing they do really well is consumer protection, competition law, fair trade, etc. Not sure they would have done this if the EU hadn’t ordered it first but either way, good outcome for users. www.judgments.fedcourt.gov.au/judgments/Ju...

As a youngster I had some vague idea I wanted to be a diplomat, too, which was supremely misguided. You should be thankful, if I was a diplomat the world would have probably blown itself up in nuclear war by now.

Related, I’ve rented places in 5 different cities all over the world and Australia is the best (just when it comes to enforcing landlord obligations - actually finding/affording a place at the moment is terrible). All regulated, govt hold deposits and tribunal resolves disputes.

Singapore is easily the worst. China was in-between, it was the Wild West but none of the landlords seemed to care at all.

For everyone close to the emerging situation, **please** document every single cyber guardrails refusal you get from a western frontier lab. It's important.

Inception's Mercury 3 is surprisingly capable (not to mention blindingly fast). I road-tested 2.5 and it wasn't reliable at all, degraded quickly, very dumb, misspelled filenames, language primitives, etc. None of that in 3 so far. I've been pleasantly surprised.

It's not frontier intelligence, but honestly for a good chunk of daily work, you don't need it. Speed can be much more important than smarts and that's where Mercury excels.

Just to be clear, InstaRig isn't just automatic weight painting; it automates landmark placement and creates a full facial control + deform rig and weight-painting with one click. Some cleanup is to be expected but you can expect pretty good results out of the box for humanoid characters.

rare non-shitpost from your pal ceej: if you self-host plex you’re gonna wanna update asap. crypto miner malware started hitting installs yesterday, it got me and I’m usually pretty up on this stuff

Actually seems like my original gut feeling was half right - new 4.1 Flash checkpoint now available.

Boo, looks like it was just a regular outage.

Should I bother trying Argon via Antigravity with the Pro plan? Reply yes or no and I will manually tally the results in the next 24 hours because Bluesky still doesn't have polls.

DeepSeek API has been intermittently down over the last 24 hours. In the past, this has often been a hint that a new model is coming as providers rebalance their inference clusters to make way. It's complete speculation on my part, but I'm wondering if DS4.1 Pro is incoming?

Product Hunt is a total dumpster fire, I don't even know why I bothered. Maybe it's useful for a backlink, but I doubt it. I think I spent a sum total of 5 minutes on it, that's probably all it deserves.

Not an artist, so this might be a controversial take. The "12 rules of animation" (squash/stretch, anticipation, etc) are really useful, but they're not set in stone. One of the most successful 2D animation series ever (South Park) literally uses literally none! The Simpsons uses them sparingly too.

Partially motivated by the attached post, but it's also something I've been mulling over for some time now. So many post-2000 3D animations just borrow from the same generic "Pixar" style. I'm not saying artists are to blame, we saw the same genericism in the video game industry.

Screenshot from Unity Store submission. I don't know how this compares historically, but that sounds high! The iOS App Store process should really implement something like this.

Can't find the tweet, but Tim Sweeney just said that Epic Games vibe-coded a replacement for the launcher. To anyone attacking him - this really isn't a hill you want to die on. Their launcher/store was criminally bad, it actually ran slower on my Windows machine than most of the actual games.

Audio Lip Sync Pro running inside Unity. Coming to the Unity Store very soon! Some people have been asking about a streaming runtime (for dynamically generated audio inside the game itself) and it's something I could consider if there is sufficient demand.

aaand now I see news coming out that Musk pulled Starlink from Ukraine, presumably because Zelenskyy didn't capitulate to the orange man about not striking Russian refineries. "Couple more months" was obviously way too optimistic.

Nick Fisher@hydroxide.dev

I doubt you’ll pull anyone from Twitter just by posting there, seems most people migrate when the owner does something reprehensible. So just wait a couple more months, I’m sure Elon will deliver.
