lol reading his wiki page and it's incredible how almost every paragraph is just "a thing happened and he lied about it", I'd forgotten quite how dedicated he was to the untruthful arts

He was before his time - the fake it till you make it, constant pathological liar, who shot up the social ladder (until it all went wrong), blazing a trail as a pioneer for today's modern grifters

yeah I was just saying similar, a few decades later and I'm not sure his downfalls would have even downfelled him, even at the time he had that thing of realising that notoriety was currency

A real early example of a very this-century version of shamelessness. Seeing your own wrongdoing as an opportunity rather than a negative.
