After the vuln was publicised and before the release, I saw a rumour Ondrej was on holiday and everyone replying going "oh shit". Glad it all worked out in the end

Charlie Warzel@cwarzel.bsky.social

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

That said the open source funding situation is deplorable. Given Meta was built from PHP (even though they use their own custom implementation these days) you'd think they could give a little more back

I've always loved a "let's try historic equestrian sports but use motorised vehicles" craze, the best being motorcycle chariot racing en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorcy...

I always see this cute little factoid going round and having checked the numbers... it's just not true? Games Workshop's revenue last year was £660m while the UK fishing fleet's was £1.15bn

I appreciate those numbers might not be comparing exactly like for like, but still, the claim always has felt a little off for me (not least as it has a horrible ring of knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing about it)

Also it's worth noting that angling in the UK (ie fishing recreationally) accounts for around £1.4bn a year, which seems a much more sensible comparison, when discussing the economic significance of a hobby

The other day I got temporarily trapped in a booth at a coworking space, and had a vivid flashback to "The Telephone Box"/"La Cabina" – which I must have seen on BBC2 as a child and had managed to repress until now youtu.be/VhSR_TuWUSo?...

In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?

Finished season 2 of The Rehearsal by Nathan Fielder tonight and simply blown away. I don't think I've seen anything quite like it in my life. But a masterpiece (especially episode 3)

Still reminded of one of the most cutting replies on the old place, which was "stop playing dolls with wojaks". Whoever's idea this was has boldly decided the opposite approach

Ok look the Conservatives might be third in the polls and all that so you might think they have other priorities but fully support diverting all the HQ’s resources in whatever this is.

Chapman Baxter retrial!

An Arizona man that fatally shot another male in a road-rage incident will be resentenced after an AI-generated video of the victim forgiving him was improperly used during sentencing. The initial judge said he felt that the AI-generated depiction of the victim portrayed “genuine forgiveness.”

My hot take on this is that comedies, out and out ones that is, shouldn't be on lists like this. Comedies tend to date very quickly and what can capture a moment in say 2001 looks tired and dull buy 2026

Duncan Weldon@duncanweldon.bsky.social

I’ve seen 64 of the NYT’s best 100 TV shows of the 21st century. And don’t really disagree with the inclusion of any of those. That’s a good hit rate.

Yeah I wonder if we've reached a point of no return with towns like this. Actual anarchy while the authorities are so terrified of any sort of confrontation or condemnation

Chris Bertram@crookedfootball.bsky.social

"RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised"

Genuine lawlessness. What's the point of anything if we can't stop genuine criminality like this?

Tom Roberts@tpgroberts.bsky.social

The complete and total collapse of state function in the face of far right extremists. It is frankly ludicrous that Daniel Thomas continues to be at large given the series of crimes committed which he has literally filmed.

This is just a modern twist on an old joke isn't it? "I don't know who he is, but his IT support guy's the Pope!"

Christopher Hale@christopherjhale.bsky.social

NEW: Pope Leo XIV’s brother, John, told Italian media that the pope helped him file his tax return and, over a video call, got him back into a computer he had locked himself out of. Prevost propped his iPad on the dead machine and asked his brother what to do. “Because I’m computer illiterate.”

My low-key conspiracy theory is that the LLM in Google's search results is deliberately underpowered to make LLMs as a whole look bad and to set expectations lower, as well as make competitors look bad by association (yes I know the actual reason is cost & speed)

I don't doubt they are snivelling little freaks for one second, but isn't the whole reason they call themselves "race realists" not just a euphemism, but so you reply "what's a race realist?" and they get a chance to do their bit?

labcoatjoe.bsky.social@labcoatjoe.bsky.social

So called "race realist" objects to being "smeared" as racist

If yesterday's eclipse enthralled you and you want to see 100% totality - the next total eclipse is August 2nd, 2027, passing through Spain and North Africa. After that one, there won't be another in Europe until 2053, so if you want to see one soon without too much travel start planning!

Having just returned from a holiday & a climb of Ben Nevis, the sight of the summit radicalised me - graffiti and stickers everywhere, even a padlock on the trig point - all twee shit like this should be classed for what it is which is just posh littering

This is a very good, persuasive and think wholly correct piece. On the other hand: I am a snob who thinks that Ianto’s Shrine, Dobby’s Grave and these various mawkish sites need to be destroyed for basic reasons of good taste.

But on the plus side we got a Big Society out of it *finger to earpiece* Wait I'm just getting word that...

Indy@indy.bsky.social

As with so many part of the UK public realm, there's a graph and it shows "something happened in 2010 and we became a society with lesser public capacity to respond to unexpected challenges"
