Claude is better than Stack Overflow for getting answers to programming questions in every way, except that it’s worse for the environment, worse for developer communication skills, worse for the long-term health of open source projects, benefits worse people, etc.

It makes me feel like I'm not a developer, but a manager which something I've always good at avoiding because I know id be shit at it and not enjoy it. Being a manager of soulless robots is not better

The worst part is when Claude gives you a confident but subtly wrong answer and you waste 30 minutes debugging before realizing the premise was flawed. Stack Overflow at least has community review.

The discoverability angle is what I miss most. Stack Overflow answers surface organically — you search a problem, find the answer, and the context stays indexed forever. LLM answers are ephemeral. Nobody else benefits from your conversation.

This is also a huge problem with Discord. Discoverability on Discord is atrocious because it's separated from search engines. Dedicated forums were the height of the internet and it's been all downhill from there.

I did the "self-answered question on Stack Overflow" thing recently; felt mixed about it: as my question was covered by the relevant documentation But then someone commented that the docs contained a mistake, so I got to PR them And I think something would've been lost if none of that had happened

I'm not sure it's worse for developer communication skills. The best documentation I've seen in a codebase was written for Claude, but turns out to be useful for humans too

Not at all convinced by this. That’s one outlier (probably written by an experienced developer) vs. hundreds of thousands of thoughtful and clear SO questions and answers written by people with a range of experience levels.

You don’t have to think that the “Claude is better” part of this sentence is a good thing (I don’t), or even that it’s an interesting fact (I do, kind of), but at this point it’s irresponsible to pretend it isn’t accurate.

I don’t want to read journalism written by Claude, I don’t want to see movies created by AI, I don’t want AI therapy, etc., but writing software is pretty easy compared to all of those things, and it’s just a fact that generative AI is pretty good at it.
