Claude is better than Stack Overflow for getting answers to programming questions in every way, except that it’s worse for the environment, worse for developer communication skills, worse for the long-term health of open source projects, benefits worse people, etc.

All true, but on the other hand: ✅ Less likely to get killed by a cop ✅ Less likely to get killed by an incel with an AR-15 ✅ Less likely to get killed by an asshole in a giant truck ✅ Less likely to get killed by a wildfire ✅ Less likely to get killed by random stuff I bought at the grocery store

The internet told them Europe was a social paradise. Turns out the trains are awful, the health care isn’t free, and people can be really mean.

Finally blocked that Aaron Rupar guy. He’s not Tennessee Holler bad, or even Scott Horton bad, but still, imagine spending your one wild and precious life farming engagement from the most annoying people on earth by taking screenshots of things Trump says and posting them on social media websites.

Travis Brown reposted

Accounts like this, Ron Filipkowski, and The TN Holler all do the same thing: steal videos, don't credit videos/images, rarely quote post or post links to sources. They're content engagement farming with other people's content.

Greg Pak@gregpak.net

@iwillnotbesilenced.bsky.social appears to never post an outgoing link. Never reposts; only takes other people's videos and posts them without credit or links. That doesn't look like activism or organizing to me. That looks like extraction. 🤷

I don’t believe in prison or the death penalty but anyone who wants a car that they drive on the street to go 0-60 in one second or whatever is a fucking psychopath who shouldn’t be allowed to participate in society

The “political scientist” who was responsible for this particular graph going viral has apparently taken it down and apologized (on Twitter, of course). That’s great! Also he should never be taken seriously by anyone ever again.

Travis Brown@travisbrown.dev

I hate screenshot culture so fucking much. If you repost some rando’s unsourced screenshot of a graph because it’s vaguely professional-looking and supports some idea you want to believe, then idk, you might not be a bad person, but you’re definitely making the world a worse place.

Call me old-fashioned but IMO there are some professions where being a gullible dipshit on Twitter who spends their time misleading other gullible dipshits on Twitter should probably be disqualifying.

Very bittersweet / annoying to read someone dunking on some shitty thing you hate (cyclists, Bluesky) knowing they’re a fan of some vastly shittier thing you hate even more (drivers, X dot com)

I do my best to avoid buying anything American, and I especially want to support European tech companies, but damn I wish that didn’t feel like taking a time machine back to 2011.

The one nice thing I can say about Hetzner is that they haven’t added any kind of “AI Assistant” bullshit to any of their products, but unfortunately that’s only because they forgot how to add any features to any of their products a decade or two ago.

My last research work with @algorithmwatch.org, on Google AI Overviews on German regional elections. Why AI Overviews? Because many more people see these than chatbot answers. In sum: Google's previously clear approach to election-related info seems to be replaced with something much messier.

X‘s daily Community Notes updates have been pretty consistent this year, until last week (the current latest bundle was created over a week ago).

Travis Brown@travisbrown.dev

The last Community Notes data bundle was created over a week ago and published last Thursday, so it’s time for the 2025 Q4 round of “is this incompetence or is it just Elon acting pissy about something again”.

I think Community Notes is kind of interesting in theory, but I find it increasingly hard to care about exactly how and why shit is fucked up over there. Still, if anyone knows if there’s a clear reason for Musk to be annoyed about Notes right now, I’d be curious to hear it.

Thinking about how lonely software development has become, and it’s partly AI, but it’s also the fact that so many software developers turned into mask-off fascists the minute they realized they could get away with it without harming their careers.

The one gen AI product I would never disable and would probably pay money for is a browser plugin that draws Dracula Flow hair on every photo of Andrew Tate I have to look at

How are there so many beloved BBC journalists who look exactly like this and are also wildly racist pedophiles? At least I only have to learn about them when they die, but that seems to happen every couple of months now.

Substack has started withholding a small number of Nazi accounts in Germany, which is good, I guess! What’s not so good is that you can still view the publications that these Nazi accounts own, you can find them in search, and you can even subscribe to them.

Paris Marx@parismarx.com

getting tired of people on the left still launching substack newsletters after all the reporting on that company in recent years

This kind of moderation action makes it clear that these American companies aren’t at all concerned about complying with European laws. They know they will never face consequences for this shit. Why make changes that could impact your business when a meaningless gesture works fine?

Just deleted a post because I don’t want to contribute to the spread of disinformation in any way, but fingers crossed the event at issue will actually happen soon and we can celebrate properly.

The best part: the old screen name is available for anyone interested in impersonating a federal agency (I just checked).

Travis Brown@travisbrown.dev

If you want to get mad about some shit the US government did that isn’t murderous or fascist but is just nonsensical and fucking stupid, the National Labor Relations Board account on X recently changed its handle from “@NLRB” (which it had had since 2009) to “@NLRB_Board”.

You could deactivate that old Twitter account, or (for a limited time) you could change your screen name to one that’s presumably linked from thousands of US government web pages and pretend to be a US government agency for a few days until you get suspended. Seems like an easy choice!

In general I find it annoying to run into Americans in Berlin, but last night I saw some Waschbären here for the first time, and I felt really proud of these little guys, just climbing around on abandoned buildings, not really assimilating, causing problems for our German hosts

I’ve listened to a few Ashley St. Clair interviews, and IMO the one Brian Reed did last month is by far the most responsible, even though Reed is a normie journalist I often disagree with. I don’t know why leftists in media default to deference so often when talking to formers, but it’s a problem.

perhaps we should view nazi tattoos as disqualifying from here on out. i kind of assumed we'd already view them as disqualifying but was unpleasantly surprised so maybe from here we could all agree not to downplay nazi tattoos since they seem pretty indicative of broad disregard for human dignity

Productive morning in Berlin: picked up my new Aufenthaltserlaubnis at the Ausländerbehörde and happened to ride past a burned out car (the first really good one I’ve seen in a year or two).

I would learn German and get my German citizenship solely to be able to vote for a politician who would pledge to get these fucking vehicles out of our bike lanes and off of our sidewalks. Fuck Amazon, obviously, but also fuck every other company doing this shit.

It’s amazing how much even in a city like Berlin the experience of being a pedestrian or cyclist is made more dangerous and just generally shittier by the government’s insistence on subsidizing Amazon in every way possible.

We need a labeler for every account on here that has ever posted BREAKING on a tweet screenshot.

Travis Brown@travisbrown.dev

Just saw a reskeet of some Substacker asshole I’ve never heard of (Timothy McBride) posting “BREAKING” on top of a screenshot of a tweet from yesterday by some podcaster I’ve never heard of posting something “BREAKING” about Iran with no clear source. What the fuck is this? How did we get here?

This is Bluesky, so you might hope that at least the engagement farming Substack guy puts alt text on the screenshots he posts of random shit he finds on Twitter. But no, of course he fucking doesn’t.

This is why I prefer Bluesky, your home for artisanal clout farming engagement bait screenshotted from Twitter by real humans

went back to Threads for the one thing I use it for, looking for funny dril replies, and I can't get over how about 80% of the accounts on there seem LLM-generated to post High Engagement Topics sourced from Twitter

I just identified this “Dux Vul” guy and guess what, he’s a name in the European tech startup scene and has had C-suite jobs at companies you’ve heard of.

We need a big comprehensive compilation of people praising / defending Platner. I’ve hated every second I’ve had to spend learning about this guy but at least he could give us a list of people nobody ever needs to listen to again.

This is the most frustrating thing about German immigration as well. Will your residence permit get extended for one, two, three, or zero years? Will the officer immediately switch to English or yell at you for your shitty German? It’s all 100% a lottery based on how their morning is going.

These are two extremely annoying men who sometimes individually make something beautiful more or less by accident. They shouldn’t be allowed to talk to each other and they definitely shouldn’t be allowed to use AI.
