I can't speak for these apps but the difference for having local self-hosted AI for searching and tagging functionality is not what's bad, the problem is Google having access to all your information and using it for their own unethical purposes.

Because even if they did they still don't have access to your data if it lives in Your computer or Your servers. I'm not defending "AI" companies, most don't even understand what that means. Search-engine systems are a helpful and positive thing when the user has the full control and ownership

We’ve gone full circle, self hosted photo libraries was how we all started. Adobe Lightroom and iPhotos, and I think even Ubuntu had one back in the days. Then the convenience of cloud killed them all. But Immich is way better than anything from 15 years ago

I am using immich self-hosted, it works just perfectly fine (on all platforms). Installation via docker compose is straight foreward also. Great Open source project. If anyone interested in details, no problem. I will give my best to help 👍

It's weird to me that "photo storage" apparently automatically means "web hosting" in casual conversation to the new generation. Because to me, if you asked for a "photo storage" solution, I would tell you to just buy more hard drives. Maybe buy a NAS if you're really really serious.

I use Ente and it wasn't too bad. Some of the metadata guy lost in the shuffle on a few photos and videos, but we're talking less than ten that I've noticed out of thousands of files.

I also really love Ente because it has local image recognition that trains on your computer/device to allow for searches like "people with red shirts" or whatever without uploading that training information anywhere.
