He'd walk away for some petty reason, but he'd tell everyone except Jerry that it was because of the kid. He'd also come right back the second he faced any hardship.

"everybody's mind was always on that kid, how bad they were suffering, nobody had any time for my lunch which got stolen out of the fridge AGAIN!, lemme tell you if they hooked me up to that machine I'd be powering the entire planet"

This is an A++ joke, only very slightly marred by the fact that I'm having a hard time thinking of a fictional character who would be less likely to walk away from Omelas than George Costanza

Walking away from Omelas because he thought everyone was just too weird and didn't like it. He had no idea there even was a kid.

I know this flavor of joke is poisonous like nostalgia to me, but damn if I don’t want to bottle it and keep it forever (in a cramped, squallid, windowless room).

"You ever see these people, the ones who walk away? What is the thought process here? The kid is in the basement, eating slop in a bucket, thinking, thanks pal, I'm still bucket boy but have fun in New Jersey..."

Elaine: You're telling me there's a kid in the basement? Jerry: A kid! Elaine: *shoves Jerry* Get out! You're kidding. Jerry: No kid! Just 𝐚 kid! Kramer: *enters* Jerry: Kramer, you hear about this kid? Kramer: Carrying our sins? Ohhh yeah. George: *jealous* I bet I could carry the sins.
