It's so funny because, if someone says Kris is supposed to be self insert, you can directly tells that they DO NOT understand what Deltarune is trying to say at all! Even by the end of chapter 1 you could star to tell that no, Kris is still very much their own person!

I guess in a sense you are literally *inserted* lol. I just mean that I’ve seen people use the “self-insert” argument to say they can call Kris whatever pronouns they want instead of their actual ones.

Which considering they are very clearly their own person, who still has their own however many years of established life before, and continues to act on their own even after you've started the game, is very stupid.

Kris is nb, this is fact, but the tendency for the player to assume they're just an avatar for themselves is an intentional, and Kris is designed to engender this. It's part of their arc about their loss of autonomy and depersonalization via the players' control. This was the same with Frisk in UT.

If Kris was a "blank slate" meant to represent the player they'd let you name them whatever you wanted like Pokémon or Persona. Hell, they'd probably let you select your pronouns. But they don't. They're specifically named Kris and specifically go by they/them. Why is that hard for so many to grasp?

it's not they're just scared of their blorbo game having us scary nonbinary people. i think if tony hox makes another game he should have the playable character use doll/dolls pronouns

iiiit might have just been One Guy saying it but i think i've seen it around a few times- Mettaton EX, if treated as a separate character from Mettaton (which is stupid but they went with that), doesn't get referred to with many pronouns, so obviously that means Mettaton EX is a woman.

slight addendum for clarity, they didn't seem to treat this as "Mettaton is transfem, and comes out in EX mode," they meant like "obviously this is a girl body because Legs and pronouns should reflect anatomy right"

Some people still do not get it, or they try to invent justifications. It's a revolving door between the ass-out hilarity of the "Garfield questioning the 'No Garfields allowed' sign" meme, and the infuriating stubbornness of pseudo trans-exclusionary radical sexism in ludonarration.

This image of the infobox is funny, but mostly because you can show it to someone and they still say "nope, his gender is only "unstated" because my quote-mine says so. Also, he's a self-insert." It's an exercise in ignorance that's so dogged and so determined that it is *almost* funny. Almost.

The real wily ones try to state that Kris is NB because *your* gender as a player isn't stated. Which is also wrong. Deltarune (and Undertale, I guess) IS, however, a self-insert story. You're just not playing as Kris. This is you. This is what you play as. Kris is just your puppet. Kris ≠ You.

As an aside (I know I'm prattling), there's another game (distantly related) where you're expressly puppeteering a character. That character (and two others) are aware of your existence. The puppet? Their gender is definite as well. This guy doesn't change pronouns just because you're in control.

“Kris is a blank slate” is pretty wrong “Kris is vehemently against other people telling them or making them be what they are or are not” is more accurate. Hell, we’re not even sure if those are preferred. Everyone’s just using “they” cuz it’s the most neutral.
