Reading this late at night and I couldn't find the theme switcher to go to dark theme (which wasn't the default even my Mac is in dark mode now…) 🤔

Nice! I also thought that it’s a bit too magical for my taste. nit-pick: “The default based on selected theme feels a tad too magic to me” This sentence doesn’t seem right? The default is fine, it’s the toggling back that’s the issue?

Thanks. Fixed. I don't think it was a good call to edit and tweak this post this morning, because in the hours since I published it my uvula has been abseiling down my oesophagus.

i’m still selfishly stubborn on offering a choice between modes on personal projects. better option (in my selfish opinion) is styled versus unstyled (reader style)

I found this design very confusing at first, probably because it wasn't changing my system for me to see the effect outcome. For a lot of low tech users, I think this will feel like something is broken.

I see where you're coming from, but the same can be said of most theme switchers. On any tri-state switcher at least one setting will appear to have no effect at any given time. Possibly two, depending on system preference. I don't think it can be avoided while offering an explicit system option.

Fair assessment. It's even a tricky thing for users who want that kind of variation in context (some settings follow system some are set independently). I have two sites I have to set to light mode because their dark mode is unusable, for example. I often forget this and am surprised. lol

I busted my theme switcher. been thinking about how to re-implement it. I was going towards: if a user hasn't clicked a button, use system setting. if they picked a theme, stick with it from that point forward. hadn't thought about using a second click to revert to system. I dig it.

There's another one I love putting in my own stuff: Sundown. Since we don't have proper ambient light sensor access you use geolocation + sundown as a proxy for "it's dark" and swap over based on that. Is it overly complicated? Sure. Does it make me smile? Every time.

Lea's great post on the subject:

🔥 New blog post: Dark mode toggles that expose three states (system, light, dark) seem like the best option. Until you think about user goals, that is. Before rushing to disagree, hear me out. lea.verou.me/blog/2026/da... PS: As a data point, @jakearchibald.com was converted after reading this 😅
