Anyone who thinks the NYC subways are scary does not ride the NYC subways. Or perhaps hasn't since the 1980s (and even then it wasn't as bad as people claimed).

I cannot emphasize enough that the New York City subway is not scary. It’s one of my favorite parts of living here. I grew up in the suburbs having to drive on highways everywhere and that’s way scarier

Given the gothamist stories that have come out, NYC subways are scary, but more in a: "You are running them on a what, using what??" "Our circuit breakers (not fuses, breakers!) routinely explode, so we've had to cover them with abestos to prevent fires."

Yeah - the entire system appears to be held together with some duct tape and a paper clip, but I love it here and would never leave.
