Dollars to donuts he’s using the police academy gym because he asked his police security to help find a secure location to do this, and they were the ones to suggest this. Also, he’s playing at, like, 11 at night.

New: Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a group of his friends have been secretly using the NYPD Police Academy’s gymnasium in Queens to play pickup basketball — scrambling some operations at the facility. w/ @grahamrayman.bsky.social & Joe Anuta www.politico.com/news/2026/10...

I can't explain why, but trump really is a special case in terms of being able to get away with saying and doing the most reprehensible shit. Other GOPers who do this have been able to ride his coattails to some degree, but in general it still disgusts people when anyone else does it.

Paul Waldman@paulwaldman.bsky.social

This will go down as one of the most incredible screwups in recent campaign history, and it happened because brain-fried Republicans like Ramaswamy can't imagine that voters don't actually want politicians to be gigantic assholes. My latest at Public Notice: www.publicnotice.co/p/vivek-rama...

between serbia, brazil, and hopefully november 3, a good reminder: voting works it’s not the end, there’s always work to be done after the vote, but if you want to beat the motherfuckers and keep them out of power: vote your asses off

Dog Halloween (pt 1). There was a Halloween party for dogs in my neighborhood today, so obviously I took some pictures :) Also, if anyone knows the actual humans in these pics, let them know so that I can share full res photos with them if they want! #upperwestside #nycopenstreets

I know this isn’t the main point of this unhinged rant, and also that cultures work differently re: naming, but…I also have the same last name as my brother BECAUSE HE’S MY BROTHER and not because I secretly married him?

Ilhan Omar@ilhanmn.bsky.social

The pedophile protection party’s president is laundering right-wing conspiracy theories through the most corrupt DOJ in American history. Whenever the news turns bad, this creep reaches for one name: mine. So let’s make it crystal clear. My name has always been Ilhan Omar.

Honestly, I am 52 years old and if a stranger started speaking to me the way they do in this anecdote, I would also stare daggers into them until they slunk away in shame.

I voted yes on all five ballot measures. 1-4 are all different streamlining efforts to reduce to absolute morass of overlapping regulations that create years-long delays to get anything done. The last is to shore up the city’s rainy day fund - a no brainer.

Elana Levin@levin.bsky.social

I’ve been looking at the ballot measures and one that I’m particularly excited for Measure 1 which will expand our ability to do outdoor dining. It’s a huge disability access and infection control opportunity. For more on the ballot measures see the section in @jfrejnyc.bsky.social voter guide

Many of the city’s overlapping regulations were a understandable backlash to the Robert Moses era, where he just steamrolled over everyone, but we went so far in the other direction that it now takes years to get the simplest, least objectionable projects done.

Also they moved the polling site from along Columbus to the entrance on 77th street, which is going to make voting on marathon Sunday very interesting given that this street is inside the marathon lockdown zone. Cc @mayor.nyc.gov

Pure anecdata, but I have never seen a line in a non-presidential year election in my neighborhood, where every candidate is a shoe-in.

Still one of my prouder moments on the old site that I made fun of armond white’s schtick enough that he threw a fit and blocked me.

Another one - I am actually old enough that the ability for a woman to open a bank account without a man occurred the year I was born.

Hey New York! Early voting starts today! Also don’t forget to FLIP YOUR BALLOT to vote on the ballot initiatives (I’m voting yes on all 5).

Over on the bad site, a defense of the ad featuring Amy Acton's mother is that Acton's story doesn't make sense because someone can't just escape justice by leaving the state for such a serious crime. That's simply not true. Over a decade ago @bradheath.bsky.social did a great piece on this:

usatoday.comThe ones that get awayAcross the U.S., more than 180,000 fugitives can escape justice just by crossing state lines, a USA TODAY investigation finds.

Had a moment of contemplating waiting until Halloween/Marathon weekend to get one of these and then remembered that I live inside the finish line lockdown zone for the marathon and waiting until the nuttiness of that weekend to vote is just kinda dumb. But other people should do this!

🚨🚨voting sickos: NYC early voting sticker designs just dropped 🚨🚨 we’ve got ones for halloween AND the marathon!!! early voting starts TOMORROW www.thecityreporter.nyc/2026/10/23/e...

anyway, gonna spend THIS weekend early voting and then going to take pictures on Sunday at my neighborhood halloween costume parade for dogs.

Genuinely my favorite time of year!

New York Metro Weather@nymetrowx.bsky.social

Friday’s Weather Rating: 8/10 A glorious stretch of weather continues! High temperatures are cooler today, near 60° F with plenty of sunshine, low dew points and a light breeze. Winds are less gusty and the vibes remain very nice out there!!

blaming incredibly vulnerable trans women for actions that are almost certainly committed ~100% by cis men is truly reprehensible. Also "supporting the mental health of trans people" in no way means that this organization does *not* support the mental health of cis women as well.

Mark Grimshaw@markgrimshawtism.bsky.social

The Women’s Rights Network are now attacking the mental health charity Mind for supporting trans people with their mental health during a time of unprecedented attacks on their rights. These are the “legitimate concerns” “worthy of respect in a democratic society” the Labour Party has normalised.

Guys, GUYS! There’s a Halloween dog parade in my neighborhood on Sunday!

Brad Lander is one of the most humane and decent people out there in American politics right now. And he’s a bulwark against genuinely radical anti-Israel politics in the US right now. And still, the Israeli government hates him. They’re writing off a whole generation of non-Orthodox American Jews.

As a long time Apple user, I have learned very intensely to never buy the very first iteration of a product. I figure by the time I’m ready to upgrade phones again in a few years, this will be fully cooked.

Sounds like the iPhone Duo is a cool prototype but flawed.

This is the baseline now. Other suggestions - at least 13 (if not more) justices, but only 9 sit on any case and they rotate (like in the circuit courts), which makes it harder to game out which justices might hear any case - geographic diversity. at least 1 justice elevated *from* each circuit

...Anyway, to the extent simply "packing the court" would be a race to the bottom (or a 100 person Court), I think these ideas could actually help insulate the court overall from the partisanship we've seen in recent years, and still provide *some* ideological balance.

...and yes, I personally want a court made up entirely of Sotomayors and Jacksons, but I'm trying to think through how this would actually work with the political system we have.

Expanding the Court is the moderate position

...We can see how this helps *a little* with Gorsuch - being a western states judge leads him to some unexpected positions, despite his general right-wingedness. - flexible court size - each president simply gets two appointments per term, but no replacements on death/retirement.

...this would reduce the gamesmanship around retirements, and also let really old people retire regardless of who is president so that they're not literally dying on the bench. Those are just some ideas percolating around that I think can all work together in some fashion.

Oh hey, when I broke my ankle in May it took AN HOUR for EMS to show up. I chalked it up to not life threatening+major flooding going on at the time, but it was really fucking annoying, for me and the kind people who kept me company on the subway platform for AN HOUR.

i spend enough time on city streets to wonder how the lack of parking and traffic law enforcement in so many areas plays into this. not mentioned in the article, tho

The mailer is bad enough for being fraudulent, impersonating garbage, but what I really worry about is kids in abusive households where parents will assume this means something it does not.

Laura Bassett@lebassett.bsky.social

Team Paxton appears to have sent out fake mailers to Texas voters impersonating a trans student group and claiming to want to help kids secretly transition. The actual group said they had nothing to do with it, despite the mailers copying their aesthetic, and the address traces to a random UPS box.

I always appreciate the final vindication of Howard Dean’s 50 state strategy. We won’t win everywhere, but make them actually compete everywhere. Don’t cede a single race.

Senate Democrats are going into Mississippi for the first time, with an ad buy of $1+ million set to start tomorrow, AP reports: apnews.com/article/demo... I cannot recall the last time the main Dem national groups would have gone into a MS federal race.

Sometimes I worry that my ankle is never going to go back to ‘normal’, and it probably won’t 100%, but then I think about how hard it was to walk two blocks in the first week or two I got out of the boot and now I’m itching to take walks for fun again, and mostly working on getting better at stairs.

My personal one that only matters to me is that all of the big law firm scenes in Michael Clayton were filmed in my old firm’s offices, and I find it funny every single time that Clayton, described as an associate, has a corner office that actual firm partners would knife each other for.

Amy "Thunderjam" Chase@amythunderjam.bsky.social

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

I know in some ways they were too little, too late in terms of actual accountability, but Dems should also keep in mind just how popular and salient the televised-in-the-evenings January 6th hearings were.

Mark Chadbourn@chadbourn.bsky.social

Democrats are preparing to investigate Musk if they win control of the House in November, Politico reports. Potential probes would focus on his DOGE leadership, federal job cuts, alleged data breaches, government contracts and Starlink’s role in Ukraine.

This was my immediate reaction as well, but mine was much a more saracastic "WhY wOn'T mY kIdS tAlK tO mE aNyMoRe?!"

The easiest way to get a big scoop in journalism is to straight-up steal it from @marisakabas.bsky.social, as we've seen over and over from "respectable" outlets.

people keep making jokes about New York and New Jersey being next, but he's not doing this because it's 'foreign', he's doing this because it's evocative of a non-white country that he views as our enemy.

One of the genuine things I hope for is that, as people in traditionally red or purple areas get over the psychological hurdle of voting for dems, that the behavior sticks for at least some portion of them in future elections.

Eric Michael Garcia@ericmgarcia.bsky.social

I don’t do copium and I don’t Democratmaxxing. I am a journalist. But I will say this looking at the samples: polling is going to have a big miss and will underestimate Democrats. Pollsters are being skittish and weighting for 2024.

I know the point is the disgusting bigotry, but I can’t stop tripping over “mixed sex ward”, like, if your irrational and unjustified fear of trans women is that they might have male parts, THERE ARE ALSO ACTUAL MEN IN THE SAME ROOM.
