Even if you want to be entirely self interested, what do these people think happens to the local population on the radicalization front when you, just as a random example, pull $70M of funding from comprehensive health, education and welfare programs in Afghanistan?

And these are just the most direct costs. My brother worked on USAID funded programs that provided educational resources to refugee and displaced kids. What do you think happens to thousands upon thousands of kids in Afghanistan without access to decent, basic education?

It produces more terrorists, which actively benefits the fascists running our government. 9/11 was the greatest boon they've ever experienced, and if they could make that happen again, they'd do so in a heartbeat.

not just that soft power is good, but other countries with interests that are not aligned with ours are continuing to fund at least some things globally (China, for instance, is funding a pretty massive construction boom in Africa), and now there is no counterweight from the US.

China is absolutely not a replacement for the aid we no longer provide, but they’re the only ones on the ground making a big show of what they’re doing, and now we’re offering nothing to counterbalance that.

I use Afghanistan in particular, not only because of my brother working there, but because we spent twenty years trying (and failing) to specifically fix the radicalization problem there in the wake of 9/11.
