there’s a Finnish movie i like and i considered it an emotional drama and then halfway through a second watched i realized that it was labeled a comedy. it occurred to me then that many moments were supposed to be jokes that i thought were like, fraught

lol I can see it It's so weird, I don't find it terribly hard to socialize with Finns, to get them to laugh or anything, but you set them in front of a movie and it's like they're in church or detention or something

Ojan pohjalla hampaita sylkiessäni minä oksensin verta ja itkin... If there's an opportunity to be stone-faced and grim, we're taking it. So if we're clearly being grim, it's a competition of "yes and", and you lose by breaking character. The mundane is grim, and the grim is hilarious.
