It reminds me of the super computer in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, which was asked what the meaning of life is. The answer (after millions of years years of calculation) was 42. So my answer to the question what do we need AI for? 42!

Would still be so funny to travel to the past to tell people that in the future everyone will have a pocket device with access to most of the world's knowledge and connecting us to large parts of the world and we use it to feel bad & filter above knowledge through robots that are wrong half the time

If people get made redundant because of AI how are they going to pay their future AI subscription at commercial rates and their increased cost of home electricity? 🤣😂🤣

It's nicer here isn't it. It's developing some nice attitude and networks and humour. It was a bit bland to begin with but I had to abandon the Nazi bot TERF war hellsite

There's nothing more magic in silicon valley and on Wall Street than the machine that allows firing everyone. That fantasy absolutely shines through in every glowing praise of AI, no matter how much blurb about abundance is being tacked on

It was only a few years ago the org I worked for boasted about environmental sustainability measures they were taking, now it's like "killing the world's environment seems like a small price to pay if it makes it faster to write and send emails"

My brother is a landscaper. My dad is a now retired auto-electrician. My mum teaches small children all day. I have a cushy job where I sit on my ass and send emails and mess about with electronic documents, and some people think they should use AI to make that job easier

My boss "it will make your job more efficient, tasks will take less time" and what am I supposed to do with that extra time during my working hours? Sit on my ass and NOT send emails?

We could use AI & cameras everywhere to scrutinise our every move with automatic fines for any minor transgressions. Include escalating penalties if we don't pay immediately and a Kafkaesque system to challenge the punishments. But please make sure that if Farage transgresses, he can just say sorry.

Wait, so you're saying that essentially the whole AI industry was predicted by Douglas Adams's race of mice, who ended up not understanding the output of their supercomputer. Would be hilarious, if IBM hadn't already called an 'AI' machine Deep Thought...

“We’ve invented a machine the destroys our own planet, drives inequality and the rise of global fascism, destroys truth and veracity, undermines all of human achievements in knowledge, science, medicine, arts and culture. And frankly we’re upset that you’re not that into it and call us names.”

Its a shortcut for morons that don't want to learn. Its an idea copying, thought stealing, creative manipulating pot of shit. Make an Ai that points out idiots that shouldn't have the ability to vote. Then let it teach them all the basic math and critical thinking they lack.

Almost certainly there are lots of data analysis tasks in med research and other science that could be accelerated with this stuff, but they don't sound exciting (even if they could be vital and groundbreaking) and would need a little investment in setting up and calibrating.

One of the few quantum computers is at a hospital in Ohio being used for increased research speeds. SO there are good uses but that isnt what the tech bros seem to what to focus on

One suspects that at least some of the people calling AI pointless may not have had much meaningful engagement with it. The existing LLMs (Copilot, Gemini, GPT, etc.) can already be extremely useful. But they're still more Alta Vista than Google at this stage.
