After 450 million years of evolutionary history, shark populations are collapsing, and more than a third of shark species and their relatives face extinction. Now scientists are trying to use the lure of “Jaws” to advance shark conservation efforts.

Is it just me or is bringing back a movie that depicts sharks as ruthless, brutal eating machines but that also that can hold a grudge, to promote shark awareness and revive dying species, a bad idea.

Yeah, not so sure that’s your best choice, as I recall they were hunting & killing this threat to human life…which is incredibly rare & generally an error in mistaking humans for seals. But point is it’s hard to imagine that this flick will inspire warmth & endearment.Talk about mixed messaging

Well, we are the villains for all animals that have gone extinct, or near extinction. It seems the human race doesn’t know how to share with anyone or anything.

One of the best movies ever made. I know a lot of kids went to see it multiple times when it first came out. Something they didn't do for ANY other movie, until then. The music was tremendous, the casting fabulous, and the situation of sharks in the water scary as hell. SNL even did parody skits.

Read Benchley's "Shark Trouble" !! After Jaws he realized what horrid damage he did to shark populations. He redirected his $ & efforts to SHARK CONSERVATION & in this book he describes how vital sharks are & how they are hunted. Like Jaws, this book will keep you enthralled

I think this is a great strategy. Patterns found between media/art/tech consumption & human behavior absolutely point to, or reveal, values (new or old) & influence. We’re all in the ppl business; makes sense to present important info in ways ppl will actively consume& (god forbid) learn from.

Media Psychology PhD so this is up my alley. ALTHOUGH there is no satisfying answer for the question of how the current political administration exists…other than a significant amount of ppl being misaligned, selfish, and ignorant (clinically referred to as fucking stupid).

Good luck with that, scientists. If facts about human annihilation from climate change doesn’t move people to change their ways & vote for their own & their children’s survival, I doubt using the Jaws movie will do it either.

After being stung by jelly fish too often, I fear them more if I swim in the ocean. Jaws made me fear going to movie theaters for a short while. I was a young teen-ager, what can I say? Why did my mom take me to the theater that day?

My friend Daina Heisters began her ceramics business in 1975 by making Jaws roach clips, little white sharks with mouth agape to receive a doobie and a toke hole in the caudal fin. Wearing a wet suit and flippers, she sold them to people standing in line to get into movie theaters showing the film.

😀The ocean is an alternative place to live by humans let alone marine animals ie, the gift of nature. Our responsibility to invest on sustainability&have compassion in conserving the environment.Protecting sharks is a critical mission not just saving a species but to protect the entire ecosystem.🙏

I'm relieved to learn that there's a concerted effort to prevent them from extinction. The effects of climate change are truly cataclysmic. Climate change is absolutely as severe a threat to humanity as nuclear warfare. It could cause the Earth to become uninhabitable for humans, birds and animals.

human elites' at times deliberate, at times neglectful, at times indifferent mismanagement of the global aquasphere has delivered us the hideous prospect of cascading population collapses among sea dwellers of all categories. mourning the parallel decline of passionate environmental stewardship

Peter Benchley regretted the harm that his book did to the shark population due to hunting them. He wrote an article that I used in my science class showing the food chain destruction when sharks are hunted. My students really understood what happens when you wipeout the top predator in a food chain

Well, we probably can’t fix the whole “humans drive climate change that raised ocean temps and is destroying entire ecosystems.” But I DO think it’s time to start feeding the oligarchs and fascists to them, so that’s something! It’ll lower America’s carbon footprint (and population) a lot as well.

No! More shark attacks are happening in our oceans, I feel a lot of it's caused by climate change which changes water temps & their food habits. My biggest theory is shark excursions!! We're training them that if they see people they get food, think about it🤔👍

We may be able to slightly ameliorate global environmental collapse though climate changes, not really, the ocean currents stopping circulation, they can't be reversed, when the water from melted ice stops them, species will die. We already seeing some of it/single species of algae kills everything.

As long as there’s “fish” sandwiches sold on every corner, fish plates, seafood buffets etc etc… there’s no chance. Never mind the Asian shark fin soup market. Everything ,everywhere is fkd and I’m not betting on human survival.

I'm no expert, but I'm going to assume it's not like, just shark fisherman that are taking too many sharks and that this is a multifaceted issue that won't go away until many structural issues get fixed. But I'm sure someone will feel better about themselves for the effort.

Typical! Idiot humans take species to the brink of EXTINCTION by KILLING THEM; then resolve to 'SAVE them from extinction by blah, blah..." Do this instead: STOP SLAUGHTERING ANIMALS for fun and profit!😭💩 .@WWF.org.@Greenpeace.@OceanConservancy.@CIWF .@stae_elephant.@AWF.@ALDF; end JAPAN whaling

They are trying to ban shark diving in federal waters of Florida. These shark diving trips help people learn how important they are to the ecosystem. People are more likely to want to protect things they experience first hand. If anyone will sign this petition it would be greatly appreciated!

Plastic, plastics, plastics! True though too, eating animals too, meat production accounts for about half of all global warming. That will soon be overtaken by downward spiraling effects as the peat melts and pumps four times what we've already pumped into the atmosphere, in one big thumping wallop.

The lesson from the movie being "Do not shove oxygen tanks into shark mouths and then shoot at them with M-1s." For the sharks part maybe a little more vegan to calm folks down. A news report of a Great White attacking a "Tally me bananas" event and eating all the produce does not instill fear.
