I’ve seen similar numbers. Bluesky users are more engaged, more likely to donate or pay for good journalism, and more likely to share it with their friends. Most people have self-selected to be here because they care, and it shows.

And for at least a bit of real world data, Bluesky continues to be the largest single source of traffic (after search) to @techdirt.com. I don't think Threads has ever shown up in any list of referrers. Ever.

And yet, I'd be willing to posit that Techdirt gets more through traffic and more subscriptions via Bluesky at a fraction of the followers of the other sites, and probably generates more income via that method than he makes off the other sites. I will, frankly never know. Not my business.

Threads isn't competing with Bluesky. Bluesky is for people who like to read, and a smaller group who like to write as well. We celebrate literature and literacy. We choose whom to follow and respond to. Threads is Meta applying a Tiktok-like algorithm to inane comments. It amplifies drivel.

When it comes to Social Platforms, most people miss Parentos Law (80/20) Rule. The metrics for success are not in the size of an ecosystem, it’s the value of the interactions of the ecosystem. Threads and X are just people being encouraged to scream at each other via algorithms designed as such.
