"Sorry, nothing we can do about schizoid lunatics just tanking your ratings, thanks for 30%" - Steam

If you’re wondering what it’s like to read user reviews on Steam at the moment, then it’s like this.

The schitzoid lunatics are customers too. I don't really think a bunch of contractors paid by Valve, the same company that doesn't seem willing or capable to define or adjudicate consistently what unacceptable sexual content is, are the right people to decide what is an 'appropriate' review.

If being very very stupid, with a bunch of broken mental models about games/reality was a prerequisite for leaving a game review, most games would all have like 7 reviews.

at what point does the publisher get to say that someone who paid for the game has an invalid opinion regarding the game they bought. should the customer get their license revoked and refunded. could such a system be taken advantage of.

Written player reviews just don't work well in this context IMO. Go to star ratings like other storefronts. People who want to engage and be part of the community will seek out places to share their feedback, and it adds just enough friction to keep away people who simply want to be mad.

As a customer as well, I don't agree. Being able to skim a bunch of written reviews rapidly to catch the vibe is dramatically more useful to me than a number.

i do actually think "remove a flagged review if it completely has 0% to do with anything whatsoever" and "remove a flagged review if it's full of hateful bigotry" are pretty achievable goals, even for some random min wage help desk worker
