Speaking of federal agencies...

You may have seen the most recent list of discouraged words for federal agencies. (www.nytimes.com/interactive/...) Here are a few of the discouraged terms in more detail... [🧵]

So, government work computers? Why would staff need to access these sites as part of their jobs? I may be a fossil, but I spent my career in public service. Except for “incidental use”, government computers weren’t to be used for non-work purposes. When did that change?

Perhaps not as big a deal as it sounds. Before the Internet, employees didn't just randomly open their favorite newspaper during the working day whenever they wanted. They would likely read it during breaks in the canteen or cafe. Reading newspapers whenever you want was never an 'entitlement'.

I have to agree with you. Unless keeping up the current affairs is part of the job, it should be kept to private time. This same policy needs to be applied to ALL publications. On another note, putting news and reporting behind paywalls further silos information into tribal groups.

While not a fan of these types of restrictions (small minded and very slippery slopey), most folks can read the news on their personal phones/personal time. Seems like a performative action designed to pave the way (and inure folks) for more aggressive and, most likely, unconstitutional actions.

As a retired manager at SSA. I cannot express my level of loathing for the people behind this horrible decision. bsky.app/profile/wire...

New internet restrictions at the embattled SSA have cut off access to WIRED, along with other “general news” websites like The Washington Post and The New York Times.

I do not understand that work computer are on the internet at all? Why? We have an intranet, company wide but even there you can't access anything non related to you. We would be vulnerable. If we can access the internet, it can access us. There is no need. Internet machines are separate.

I have already lost $1350 in SSA since Jan 2025 - SSA has not yet adjusted my payment to correct their IRMMA error. In 2023 w/Biden <30 days later SSA had made correction and never impacted my SSA pay. Under trump >90+ days and still NO response to my request. I have lost 3 months x $450 so far
