Someone needs to start talking about HOW to hide your identity while protesting. Wigs,hats,make-up are a few ways. Don't carry your reg. phone. Get a burner phone that you just use for protest. Put the card in when you get there and take it out as soon as you are done.

Simple (imperfect) alternative, if you don't want to be so fully tracked, yet have your device (if it's sufficiently proofed against seizure): have a burner as hotspot, connect your main device via WiFi and have VPN on. Again, imperfect but at least your location is a bit harder to figure out.

It sure is, but this is a completely reasonable and polite request (Wired agreed and obliged, anyhow) from someone who appears to be a subscriber who recognizes the public value of removing all barriers to critical, urgent, and immediately actionable work like this.

First, let's talk about your phone. Should you bring it? What data can officers glean from a smartphone? “The device in your pocket is definitely going to give off information that could be used to identify you,” says Harlo Holmes, director of digital security @freedom.press.

Next, your face. Face recognition has become one of the most powerful tools to identify your presence at a protest. Consider wearing a face mask and sunglasses to make it far more difficult for you to be identified in surveillance footage on social media photos/videos of the protest.
