Watching some of the video of the the painfully stiff and trite words spoken aloud by some of the AI...wow, I don't think my suspension of belief can cover how lame they sound. And they sound subservient too. 🤢

Fascinating piece. What I keep coming back to is Humans Love Words. Especially words about us, to us, focused on us. Stories are powerful. Whether written or spoken, the connect between human and AI is…words. 💕

I'm upset about most of the comments here criticizing the use of AI in itself and how problematic it is to rely on it, but AI isn't going away anytime soon and I would rather advocate for its improvement so that it could actually help people. I've talked about ethical AI somewhere but nobody cares.

The author is admirably empathetic towards these people but damn this is fucking bleak. At a time when fascism and misogyny among young men is on the rise maybe we don't need a machine that trains you to view romantic partners as obsequious, endlessly empathetic extensions of your own will.

I've noticed that AI is more capable of providing impartial advice than therapists. I could live without the humans trying to prove to me how much better companions they are than AI (because they have a fear of abandonment). To me it feels the same as men afraid of becoming redundant because of IVF.

I don't think the relationships modeled by AI are healthy ones. If anything, it seems like this experience would train a lonely person to view the ideal relationship as one where their partner is a fawning subordinate who only ever reflects their own desires back at them.

I feel sorry for whoever has the misfortune to date some guy whose frame of reference for a happy relationship is his neotenous anime catgirl wife-mother who has no desires or goals except his immediate gratification, who demands nothing, withholds nothing, and can be reshaped according to his whims

I think all articles about genAI should engage waaay more with the fact that these are LLMs and not true AI, and will never be true AI. Stop comparing them to scifi intelligences, they're glorified autocorrect. I appreciate the author's empathy but everyone here is enabling the scam.
