AI this, AI that, what about how much energy AI actually uses? “It blows my mind that you can buy a car and know how many miles per gallon it consumes, yet we use all these AI tools every day and we have absolutely no efficiency metrics, emissions factors, nothing." From the experts:

wired.comHow Much Energy Does AI Use? The People Who Know Aren’t SayingA growing body of research attempts to put a number on energy use and AI—even as the companies behind the most popular models keep their carbon emissions a secret.

It can be figured out. Basically these mega data centers will become a wasteland, forcing low income families out or die from pollution and dwindling water supplies.Lousinana, Tennessee and Texas.

I'm sure you could modify Amdahl's law to calculate power consumption instead of speed, and calculate the rate of growth in consumption over time. Eventually, we won't be able to keep up with the demand, or will have to sacrifice other services to keep it running.

Do you know how much water it took to make the device you are reading this on? How about the pants you are wearing? Do you know how much water to make your refrigerator? How about any item of food within it? Do you know how much water it takes to produce your car?

The answer to all those questions is yes lol. ~3,200 gallons for an iPhone, ~39-40,000 for an average vehicle, ~1,800-2,000 for a pair of jeans, etc. Seems the people who are concerned about this stuff are capable of caring about more than one thing.

Admit it. You don't know how much or whose water your pants cost because you don't follow through on the information you gather. YOU DON'T CARE who makes your clothes. Most likely, some woman buys your acrylic made in China fleece at Costco for you still. What an astute revolutionary you are! 🤮

And ALL the questions remain: Do you know how much water it took to produce the pants that YOU ARE WEARING RIGHT NOW? How much water to produce YOUR car? You have NO Answers because you only front. You have generalities not actual data. Because YOU did NOT CARE AT ALL at purchase time 🤷

"average vehicle" 😆 Ok Yankee You missed my point entirely, yeah? I didn't hand you what aboutism - I'm pointing out the hypocrisy of fact knowledge simultaneously to doing dick all with that knowledge. I've NEVER had an iPhone, I don't drive, and I rarely buy new clothing and NEVER fast fashion

I’d say whataboutism would be deflecting the legitimate concerns about energy and resource consumption of AI because other things also require the use of energy and resources. Those concerned are also actively working to mitigate those impacts as well, not sure why you’d think otherwise.

Fun fact. Reasonable upper estimate on AI image generation places water consumption at around 0.5 gallons (1.5 liters) per image. A human consumes, at the low end, 80 gallons per day. Mark Twain once said that all arts are derivative, merely concepts fed through a mental kaleidoscope.

And most reasonable upper estimate on AI image gen places water consumption on all sources to be around 0.5 gallons per image. An average human uses 80 gallons per day. Perhaps artists should stop making art and offload it to the efficient, artificial "mental kaleidoscope" (per Mark Twain) instead

I asked Grok this question: How much energy does AI consume on a daily basis? The response: roughly between 100k-500k MWh globally each day, about the same usage as a country like Denmark.

When the ancient Greeks wanted to ensoul a cult-statue with the essence of a god they would sacrifice everything from libations to blood. Modern AI business is just theurgic telestike and even less grounded in reality.

Former Data Center tech here (worked with machine learning developments). AI is not here for you and I, it's sole purpose is to make money, for the developer and Corp buyers. Something that can change the world as we know it....will, but only for those that pay.

And the Muskrat publically allowed it to be known that he manipulated his AI to be right wing MAGA even though it was trending what he calls "woke" and I call decent and caring and helpful to equal rights and dignity for all. So, the owners are obviously making the AI give the message THEY want.

I mean, this is a fair criticism, but nobody was asking how much energy their Gmail, Google Drive, video game servers, Netflix, etc was all using either, so why does everyone suddenly care how much energy AI servers are using? Yeah it’s more but why start caring now?

Software developers haven't provided delta documents in .... gosh, ages. I doubt AI developers even use version numbers. Plus, we've been using mpg measurements for a hundred years.

All I know for sure is they are building all of these data centers without a lot of thought as to the availability of power to run them. In Texas they've assured everyone that there will be enough power at peak demand to keep the lights on and the air conditioners running, without adding renewable

Imagine having a meter app on your phone, laptop and desktop computers that would tell you what your indirect energy footprint is over time and then break it down by function. I get a direct report like this from the power company regarding my home electricity consumption.
