is it possible to convince AI boosters that mathematics and science don't exist as human pursuits with the primary goals of producing papers and proofs, or are they just Gone

i think most of them are Gone. the real freaks who are still in it for love of the research game, well, i don't think you had to convince them in the first place

perversely the people designing the LLMs are the only ones in the field i would trust even partially with engaging with science properly

oh, for sure. i imagine the internal arguments about releasing those proofs was "Vigorous" and "Heated" and other corporatespeak euphemisms

everything's a fucking product to them. art and music and science and math all exist with the goal not of expression or understanding but with having caused a product to exist. they're betraying their own humanity with the goal of replacing everything that makes life worth living with rot

if we allow this ideology to run the world it will bring everything to an ignominious close. the human project will be finished, having produced a great deal of product before it was finally rendered obsolete by something more prolific

A terrible idea I must put out into the world just so I seem prophetic when someone searches back and says WHAT DID SHE KNOW?!: There will be LLM pets at some point in the future. When folk get sick of hallucinations and creepily emulating humanity, we'll have strange small furry things -

fwiw, i'd call myself an AI booster willingly and of my own volition, although i suspect i'm not whom you mean by the term, and i find this argument compelling and self-evidently true. math, particularly (cf. Terence Tao's really good meditations on math in the age of AI, recently)

i mean a lot of people don’t understand or see the value in art either so that’s why AI art is so crazy to them i think the same thing can be said about anything else AI is affecting- it all comes back to people not understanding the value and joy in doing things that may seem menial to them

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.
