Still doesn't make sense. They aren't allowed to stop the harms. But then they have to pay because they cause harms. If you're just going to charge them no matter what they do, wouldn't it be easier to skip the moral panic theatre and just raise their taxes?

Friendly tip: you made a typo in your post. There's supposed to be an 'in' at the start of 'insignificantly.' Less than a billion is an INsignificant increase to the cost to Meta, since it's just the cost of doing business.

Kids shouldn't have to bear the cost of keeping people engaged online. Hopefully this pushes the industry to take their safety more seriously.
