Do not try and cut the board. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth. What truth? There is no saw. There is no saw? Then you'll see, that it is not the saw that cuts, it is only yourself. -- Ninja Carpentry Ed. 1.

That's not even close to any plausible definition of serial killer. "Slasher" is the best I can come up with for what this is trying to say. Now I get flamed for getting "too technical". For XKCD. Too technical. What was I thinking?

My uncle once said "I cut it twice and it's still too short" He was at the time working 3 jobs and was on very little sleep. He couldn't figure out why it wasn't the right length the 2nd time either. Measurement = 88⅞" Cut 1 = (💭⅛ off 89) then cut 88⅛" Cut 2 = ⅞ on the wrong side of 88".. so 87⅞😄

I know someone who's been picking up woodworking and it turns out that, yeah, if you only have one cut to make you might have measurements-to-cuts at 2:1, but when you're building a whole-ass item you quickly stop measuring and just match new cuts to pieces you already have, thus tanking the ratio.

The specific thing she told me, that surprised me but in retrospect makes sense, is that measuring those subsequent pieces any other way can mess you up, even if you're really accurate. The inevitable tiny errors don't match up, and that accumulates and leads to messes where pieces come together.
