My version of this was setting up an off-grid solar LFP battery system, and thinking that I could surely make an Arduino based balancer for a lot cheaper than commercial balancers/BMSes.

For reference, I have a mechanical engineering degree, so understood basic electrical concepts, but most stuff I've learnt about batteries, Arduino, solid state electronics components etc - & actually used for real life projects - has been from the web (Battery University), YouTube, or user manuals!

Had I used an Arduino before, or coded in the last 20 years? No! Did I do the task for less money? Yes, and with a lot more control over my system than a commercial product. Would have literally spent hundreds of hours working on the project though! But now I understand Arduino! (pretty much)

What proportion of people thought to themselves, "Damn, this Coker person is cool," ... I fear the number is low, but that's what *I* thought. I think you're saying you wrote a BMS from scratch and the batteries live in your house?

As an artist/craftsperson I see this attitude at craft shows SO often, I saw a sign at one booth I LOVED, "Sure, maybe you COULD make this, but when will you get around to it?" (I work in hot glass, so it's more like $5000 in supplies and thus I'm subject to it LESS, but not never)

Yeah I've commented on how something is ""expensive"" (not really because the effort makes it worth the price) but never to the detriment of the creator. Especially when it's something like crochet, chainmail, ect. I can't wait to have a job so I can support these unique crafts ❤️

This is the conversation I have to have in my own brain every time I start thinking I’ll roll my own solution.

The trouble started with prying the back plate off after heating the glue. The plate cracked but that wasn't the worst of it. The phone started exhibiting weird touchscreen behavior and/or not booting. After many hours of humiliation I decided to cut my losses. Next time I pay someone.

This is approximately the physical version of "Why spend 10 minutes doing when I can spend 10 hours automating it" that programmers get.
