once again i am left feeling really disappointed that "Amtrak round-trip from Portland to Seattle" was ≈$40×4×2 ($320 round trip), while driving my prius was... $50 in gas. feel like we lost the plot somewhere with mass transit

oh yeah, i took a train from coast to coast a while back and it was a 3 day trip each way for about the same cost as a plane ticket. amtrak hates having passenger service and will stab your wallet for it.

at some point i'd like to get our passports in order so we can go visit Canada ... there's a handful of people we know up in the other Vancouver, among other things. but who knows how that'll end up working with how things are right now.

because i'm bored and curious i checked enterprise, and a car rental (and we'll say $70 in gas for it, sure) would run me about $200... still considerably cheaper than taking the train if you're not going by yourself

a car rental comes with total freedom (go wherever you want, whenever you want) with the only real drawback being gas prices. with a train you're at the mercy of public transit. i want to like it! it'd be great! it's just, well

this made me look up to see what it costs to take metra from milwaukee to chicago (not quite as a distance but still) and i found out metra only goes to the border and amtrak is still the best way between these two cities. what the fuck are we doing

there's this weird dynamic that rises up whenever we're together with others, where the more people we have, the more economical it is to... *not* use public transit. one or two? buss and light rail. three or four? starts to look like a lyft, even if a bus route would work just fine.
