Not gonna QT, because I don't want to add to the pile on this person is currently experiencing (even if deserved to some extent). But that argument drives me crazy. Just because *you* don't understand how LLMs work doesn't mean nobody understands how they work. This is a fiction.

I see people saying "we don't understand how it works" and that it's making its own decisions when really they mean it's non-deterministic. Idk about this person in particular. But there's a lot of magical thinking about non-determinism.

Yea a lot of the “we dont understand how it works” is people who believe these systems are thinking/reasoning so the mechanism that turns matrix math and weights into an actual mind is a mystery. But the answer is that it isnt doing those things they have just been fooled by coherent text output

Fwiw LLMs are deterministic algorithms (like all software), they just usually use a (deterministic) pseudorandom generator algorithm to not use just the single highest statistical probability of token continuation but pick one among the set of highly ranked ones.

I'm talking about the mental model of how the software works, not the details of its technical underpinnings. Yes, these randomizers are technically deterministic, but the point is that when I listen to people who say these things explain their thinking, it's about non-determinism.

Yeah, very true. I think also the “we don’t know how it works” narrative is something that the ai companies have been pushing to add to the myth making. I guess some people just believe them.

Plants grow, and they would do that regardless of any human intervention given the right environment. All AI programs could be shut down tomorrow and never reappear unless humans started them up again.

Short of solving photosynthesis and somehow pluging auto-improving self-replicating models to it, the comparison isn’t even close to holding. As of now, a simple energy consumption restriction on what this horrors eat would be enough to stop them doing anything.

the “labs” encourage this fantasist thinking by pretending that basic functions are a revealed mystery my favorite has to be “if you tell an llm not to think of a white elephant, the tokens for white elephant will be visible in its memory scratch space” like ayfkm

if you read this and replace every mention of "j-space" with "swap memory" it becomes ludicrous "In experiments where we prevented Claude from using its swap memory, it still interacted normally, but lost its higher-order cognitive functions." oooh i got chills, did you get chills? SPOOKY

They are also obfuscating how much work is done by the plain old deterministic tools in the harness, so as to make the LLM part look better :)

i know! i did a whole thread on this it just boggles me that more people don’t talk about it

llms only “exist” to give one reply at a turn you: x llm: y then the whole process starts over. there is no continuity. each reply is 100% fresh. the context of your previous “conversation” is included, hidden from you, in every request you make. continuity is an illusion

It was really noticeable with the maths boasting: presenting the work of an LLM plus *the entire mathematical literature, all the automated proof assistants, billions of dollars of compute infrastructure and tens of millions of dollars of compute cost* as "the LLM did it" :)
