This is why AGI isnt happening. Sense perception, movement, and memory are chemistries coupled to each other and all coupled to direct matter exchange with the environment, like a centrifugal governor. Nothing is representation, interpretation, “info processing”, or math.

We understand a scene because we can distinguish between the molecules and electromagnetic radiation within it. We can do that because we create molecules that REACT differently to everything in it. No one feeds us “training data“ about all the matter and energy in the universe

A core memory of mine is just me(11th grade) and my friend Chelsea(10th grade) just WORKIN a whole squad of middle schoolers in a pickup basketball game after they were talking shit about her play. I wish we could have played on the same team in school for real

Kate Starbird@katestarbird.bsky.social

This drives me CRAZY. I grew up playing sports w/ boys. I played on a U12 boys select soccer team, b4 switching to a U12 girls team that kept beating us. Nobody had any issue with any of it. Youth sports have never had the strict sex/gender boundaries that “XX-XY” activists are now trying to defend.

We would also play against the young soldiers and do some work there too (this was in korea we were military brats). We were like Wade and Bron man “Corey up there somewhere” and she would drill the nastiest passes.

well, you see, dna is like a code. just like natural languages are like code. just like traffic patterns are like code. how educating young people's brains is like coding. how relationships and dating is like designing code. the way the weather behaves like code. these are basically solved problems

I better be able to go from doing whatever to instantly being in Michaels Office being told about Doug Forcett damnit fuck a “slow“ death lmao

Kara McNair@karamcnair.bsky.social

I’m literally down the rabbithole about this. Are they ‘dead’? Yes. Did they die? I mean, yeah, they’re not alive anymore and that’s a binary state. Did they experience ‘dying’? Possibly not! (but do people die in their sleep experience dying? Also possibly not!)

People “dont see a physical barrier to machine consciousness” but then find a way to ignore/factor out every single real world physical barrier. ”I dont see how thats related” followed by “well no one really knows what it is” How can you be sure its not related to something you know nothing about?

All the fabled complexity and “emergent capabilities” are entirely abstract. There is no comparable real-world complexity

It is deeply unserious to believe that the self-directed ability of a system to construct/reconstruct itself is unrelated to cognition/consciousness. AND the system does so atom by atom using material in its surrounding environment, which it distinguishes at the molecular level to navigate the world

The fundamental unit of the brain is a molecular assembler. Everything it does is through molecular assembly. Assembling and disassembling specific molecules is inseparable from anything it does. You CANNOT ignore that

I always think "well this is trivially wrong, let me explain..." and NOPE. I have experienced new forms of ignorance you wouldn't believe. Truly incredible stuff

The “make your case clearly” bug is like the ELIZA effect in this discourse. You know you are not speaking to any audience capable of hearing you, and yet you type and type anyway, but here you get increasingly frustrated and increasingly inarticulate.

Just because you can quantify/measure or describe something mathematically, that does not mean you can DO that thing with math or in a computer. It for damn sure doesnt mean the thing is made of math either. This should be easy to understand but is messing so many of you up REAL bad.

This is why we cant let them use terms from other fields. This is absurd framing. “Self-replicating” only if you use nonsense definitions that somehow always reduce the term down to something a computer can do in the most abstract sense of the word

Compare a computer and a cell as systems at the molecular level. What can they each accomplish, real world. Which one has more (actual) general-purpose physical capability. What do they actually do. Its not hard. Its basic observation, not vitalism. One is inert, the other can do this:

Tony Durham@rhamdu.bsky.social

This is 100% valid objection and IMHO nobody has answered it yet. Most answers boil down to: it can only be conscious if it's alive. Vitalism, in other words. I don't seriously believe current LLMs are conscious. But unsupported, sweeping statements are made about all possible future AI systems.

“Scale is all you need” and the scale starts here at one and proceeds through us at tens of trillions, integrated and coordinated through the nervous system. But the foundational capabilities, the bar, starts at the one and has yet to be reached.

Of course it seems like a computer is intelligent when you limit all aspects of intelligence down to something a computer can do

The guys who know the least about cell biology love making the strongest bullshit claims about it, and then retreat to “well no one knows!” when called out on said bullshit. Its so ridiculous

I agree that there's no magic; intelligence & sentience emerges from the interactions of physical systems, and it's reasonable to expect that it could emerge from systems with a different underlying structure. But intelligence *doesn't* emerge from computation; the brain is not a computer.

Ai IS destroying your brains, because you dipshits think software feels pain, and when people try to explain why not you refuse to listen, and try pseudophilosophical arguments that dont make any goddamn sense. Software is an illusion, just look at what hardware can physically do. Now compare a cell

If you still cant tell the vast difference in capability you are just refusing to look, or doing some dualist nonsense where there must be something beyond the physics in front of you. Or you just cant understand what you are looking at. So you should stop making claims you dont know how to back

the economics of AI is everyone burning fossil fuels to abuse silicon into generating semi-usable facsimiles of ordinary knowledge work in vain hope that this claws back some of the value that is destroyed by the tide of spam and slop

Bunch of mfs in that thread that dont know the point of anything or how it is done. And they dont care about human flourishing they just want endless content to consume. They really think this means “progress” is happening, as if this crap will just passively make the world around them better

This document is going to be an assigned reading in college classes that cover this moment in time, there's a lot happening in a few paragraphs... www.ahmath.org/statements

How are computers supposed to hit general intelligence when the hardware isnt truly general purpose at all? Im talking REAL general purpose, like capable of generally doing a lot of physical real world tasks. Like cells can.

The assertion that only what is mechanical materialism (ideas like "bodies are machines") is science is dying or slowly and being replaced by other ways of seeing, understanding, and modelling biological organisms — both within the relevant sciences, e.g.

Im not even mad at the “lenient” test retake policies they have for high schools. The kids end up repeatedly exposing themselves to and practicing the material. Thats the fuckin goal

For some positivity, the amount of students demanding I stay at the school (because im just student teaching this semester to get my license) is increasing. I have been here a 1.5 months and already have some velcro kids. Warms the heart

All these terminally insecure people making it everyone elses problem with all this ai/fash/white supremacy nonsense. Im tired. This extinction burst sucks

I would like to add another thing to think of to highlight the vast gulf between us and our machines. From journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/... I would like to add another thing to think of to highlight the vast gulf between us and our machines. From journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/... What actual changes in PHYSICAL state are computers capable of vs the changes in state of cells. The properties of each state determine the capacity to ACT

The physical capacity to act on & change the real world, including itself, from moment to moment is a critical factor that Ai boosters ignore because it blows up their ideas. They rely on completely immaterial nonsense to peddle their hype. Our cognitive states ARE physical, despite Dualist claims

They just say stuff. Look at this intro. Look at the baseless assertions. I cant believe people take this stuff seriously. Pure unfiltered crank science. The illusion of a hardware software separation has COOKED all their brains. Straight up Cartesian dualism arxiv.org/abs/2604.170...

They are definitely just operating off of this assumption and then reading all kinds of bullshit into the text outputs. “Manipulating persona space” are we serious

Corey@kh0rish.bsky.social

Yea a lot of the “we dont understand how it works” is people who believe these systems are thinking/reasoning so the mechanism that turns matrix math and weights into an actual mind is a mystery. But the answer is that it isnt doing those things they have just been fooled by coherent text output
