i think it mighta been junji ito or someone else that made a short comic about how his other famous comic artist friends got practically no sleep in their careers and died young

It was Shigeru Mizuki - comic artist, antiwar activist, folklore archivist, and general cultural titan.

For context, Tezuka and Ishinomori died aged sixty. Mizuki made it all the way to 93.

To paraphrase someone: Mizuki survived serving in WW2, losing an arm to malaria, and the Japanese manga industry.

For pedantry's sake, he lost his arm in an airstrike. The malaria resulted in no further limb removal, it just sucked.
