This kind of thing is so incredibly wrong. One of my best friends in Japan, an actual yakuza who was the toughest guy I've ever met, was named Chiyaki. What did everyone call him? Chi-chan.

patreon.comA-Yokai-A-Day: A Strange Tale of a Shiryō | Matthew Meyer (The Yokai Guy)Tonight's tale comes from volume ten of Mimibukuro. It deals with a shiryō, which is a word that could just as easily be translated as "ghos

Shigeru Mizuki once said, "The power of sleep is the source of everything," while Tetsuya Chiba advised, "Break a good, hot sweat at least once a day." Given that both men were incredibly prolific in their work and lived long lives, their words carry a lot of weight. (1)

But these legendary manga artists feel almost like mythical figures. Perhaps it is a case of survivor bias. Are their any manga artists who lived long, prolific lives in spite of, or even because of, their dissolute existence? Because at that I am an expert. (2)

i am inviting anyone from a legacy media organization to explain to me why the house judiciary dems report on trump’s epstein’s ties and multiple allegations of rape isn’t worthy of extensively reporting on. i’m serious. i want to understand.

I often see people fantasize of pre-internet days where everyone was super social and living grand lives outdoors. I hate to tell you that's just the movie version--we were mostly sitting alone inside watching not-good TV for hours on end. Like... 7 hours of TV a day. Maybe more.

For the evening crowd

I clearly had bakeneko on the brain, because while finishing up my book KAIBYO THE SUPERNATURAL CATS OF JAPAN I had Conan fight a bakeneko in CONAN AND THE CAT WITCH OF KHITAI. Both coming in November. Consider them a set. link.amazon/B0gQtRJgg #CatSky #Booksky #catsofbluesky #yokai

So glad to see this! Quite frankly, if you don't know who Shigeru Mizuki is your knowledge of anime/manga--and Japan--is sorely lacking. Imagine calling yourself a fan of American superhero comics yet having no idea who Jack Kirby is. Or being a fan of comics in general and not knowing Will Eisner

I should add, I also used this method to get married. Never underestimate drunken hookups.

Another thing I have never done: Asked a girl out on a date. Girlfriends were made by party hook-ups. You made out first then decided if you wanted to be a couple together later. Most relationships lasted two weeks.

I once said to the head of a Japanese literature department: "You spend all this time covering subjects like Japanese diaspora Brazilian writing--which is interesting and worthy of study!--but say nothing about the most widely read Japanese literature on earth--manga."

An observation: Much of Japan-focused academia is--perhaps willfully--ignorant of Japanese pop culture. They Ivory Tower themselves for the "important" culture and distain the rest. I was at a gathering of luminaries recently, and I was the only one to recognize the Sailor Moon theme song.

And most Japan pop culture writers are equally ignorant of Japanese sports, even though they have just as many intersections with every facet of Japanese society.

In context, recognizing the Sailor Moon theme song was an important part of what we were there to watch. They can read kanbun and quote the Heikei Monogatari, but can't sing a word of Miracle Romance.

There it is. 7 1/2 hours of TV a day. We were not outside. We were not in third places. We were not socially well-adjusted and mentally healthy. We were isolated and slumped on the couch watching our best friend--the TV. Gen X, my friends!

A weekend for Gen X children? How did we relish our delightful freedom? Sitting on the coach alone watching TV. For the entire day. Drastically flipping channels trying to find something we want to watch on limited channels. Sighing into watching something we dont want to because it is on.

I dont think I ever once in my life got a bunch of kids together to go play a sport in a local field. I did watch kids do that in the movies, though. I also watched kids in movies ride on flying bicycles.

Trump has dominated the conversation for years because everyone rage posts everything he does. Learn the Japanese way of mokusatsu--killing with silence.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

Good reminder to all Americans that rival Flávio Bolsonaro was ahead in every poll. Those soaking in early polling victory for the "blue wave" needs to remember polls do not win elections--voting does.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.
