it is frustrating to see calls for a general strike when people having no understanding that there isn’t a lot of power in that if people don’t belong to some sort of organizing home. you need a way for people to have collective power for more than a day.

ALSO ONE OF THE REASONS WHY PEOPLE CAN AFFORD TO STRIKE FOR MORE THAN A DAY IS BECAUSE UNIONS HAVE STRIKE FUNDS AND ACTUALLY SUPPORT EACH OTHER okay i’ll go get coffee now

Ensuring that union members can endure a strike to a greater degree than their company/industry is important, and it’s predicted by how easily replaced union employees are, how important they are to the organization, how soon workers feel costs of the strike vs how soon the employer does.

The likely effect of a strike is relatively predictable. A general strike doesn’t work when only a small fraction of people might commit, there’s no organizing body, many people live paycheck-to-paycheck without a strike fund, and the strike would be dispersed enough to not have a focused impact.

And not everyone can strike without consequences other than economic ones. We're 24/7 Medicaid-paid care providers for our disabled (epilepsy/autism) adult son. So we're supposed to go on strike for a day?

i am fine with people who don’t see voting as a path to change. but you can’t just say that we can do a general strike and get out of the work of organizing people for more than a day. 1% of the workforce is unionized. fewer people than ever belong to churches or fellowship groups.

you need people to belong to something. you need places where you can build a collective identity, shared values, educate people, and activate them. getting millions of people to show up for a day or two doesn’t do that.

You mean, posting on social media doesn't count as work? 🙄 Calls for a general strike, etc, are just performative garbage that make people feel like they're doing something when in fact they aren't.

how we can actually build power: -getting people to join something -unionizing your workplace -building connections between affinity groups -joining something. doing actual stuff with other people. -joining a union. -working to end anti-union policies -joining a political org. -doing pop ed

Any single-day walk out or work stoppage would be performative at a time when we need less performance and more actual change. Think about civil rights marches & the amount of state violence required to move public opinion. And we apparently still failed to cement that change into our nat'l ethos.
