If you believe climate change is an existential threat, then don't support any Democratic member of Congress who advocates for: 1. Generative AI 2. Cryptocurrency mining 3. Indoor cannabis cultivation unless they can immediately point to a detailed plan to make said activity carbon neutral.

As I was informed my very first day on the job in the state leg by the OR Attorney General herself, in our state (like most states) if you graduate from an accredited law school, you are a lawyer. BUT, you are only an attorney in states in which you are licensed to practice law. So, yes,...

The newly minted White House press secretary may be incompetent, but let's not undermine substantive and well-deserved criticism by pushing the "she lied about being a lawyer." She appears to be a graduate of Pepperdine Law, an accredited law school, so is a lawyer (at least in OR.)

1/ The Speech or Debate Clause probably doesn't apply to the Omar search. BUT, whenever I talk about Speech or Debate immunity and argue that it should be interpreted capaciously, the pushback I always get is that we don't want to turn members of Congress into "super-citizens".

Obviously we are talking about Omar today, but the BS case against Rep. McIver is the most undercovered Trump abuse of power story out there.

Rep. LaMonica McIver@replamonica.bsky.social

Trump uses DHS and DOJ as weapons to go after the people standing up to him. Raiding @ilhanmn.bsky.social home weeks before Election Day is the kind of overreach that should scare every single American. I stand with Ilhan. We will never be intimidated into silence.

A whole new avenue of prosecuting 4th Amendment claims may have just opened up in Texas. I still need to pull up the pleadings to see how the plaintiff's attorney's defeated QI (probably due to the arresting officer admitting the official reason for the stop was pretexual.)

Bingeing the Australia "Ghosts" and yes, Aussies haven't fully addressed their colonial crimes, but seeing an Indigenous woman cast in an everyday, non-stereotyped role that could be played by any race/ethnicity is heartening—and yet still so rare on US television...

Yes, there are great shows and movies about us as NDNs, but so seldom are our actors cast as generic characters—or allowed to be NDN, but not fetishized. Resident Alien. Last Frontier. Both did a decent job. But almost every Australian show I watch casts Indigenous actors as main characters.

I’m currently on another yet deep dive on Charles I, and I can’t help but draw parallels with our current Mad King. Except I actually feel some sympathy for Chuck the Headless, scads more than the orange tyrant would ever deserve.

I hope the gods have found an appropriate means of causing perpetual suffering for John Marshall.

#BREAKING: In non-Missouri emergency docket news, #SCOTUS *grants* the Trump administration's request for a stay in the SAVE case, allowing DHS to have access to certain Social Security information. The three Democratic appointees dissent.

UPDATE: DOJ decided to play fast and loose this morning. Without even filing a notice of appeal in the DSCC case, SG Sauer made arguments to SCOTUS about the merits of the DSCC case injunction in a "supplemental brief" in the stay application pending in the California/LWV cases out of Mass.

As an historian of cod fishing, this nearly brought me to tears. Incredible recovery, but it’s definitely not the time to pull back protection.

Trevor A. Branch@trevorabranch.bsky.social

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

It’s hard to fathom the sheer scale of the devastation that occurred in Nepal and Tibet. The latest estimates suggest that the glacier-rock collapse mobilized more than 142 million m³ of material. Here’s what that volume looks like when placed over Manhattan, New York City for scale.

Bay Area friends: A friend found these small kittens behind a gas station and we've been trying to find them a home for almost two months. For now, they live in a small bathroom. Would you consider adopting? They are vaxxed, neutered, and incredibly affectionate. Please help!

Almost every celestial event is a no-go up here in the PNW, so I was shocked (shocked!) that we actually have a clear night to see the lunar eclipse. Had to walk down the street to get past the tree cover, but at least we got to see it.
