I think this turn, which is a likely-liberal person shooting a member of the opposition, is extremely ominous. And, it has been clear to me for months that we are heading into a more violent period than we’ve seen in my lifetime. I’m afraid this is the start, not the end.

Political violence is bad. It usually begets more political violence. Celebrating political violence is bad. It usually encourages more political violence, against various targets. Campus shootings are bad. They make everyone on campus less safe. It's bad that what I wrote here is controversial.

I talked to a NOAA colleague yesterday who told me that 75% of the federal employees of his division have left and he’s worried about their ability to get work done even if Congress funds NOAA at some level. The devastation to science will be felt for generations.
