This weekend was the weekend i created the "Billing" Domain in Erzeugerland. Since the advent of this project i said i do this when it will take less time writing the code than doing invoicing and everything around it manually. The day has arrived. Of course thanks to LLMs but also to growth.

For me as a son from a working class family this all feels surreal sometimes. It's for sure not normal by any means to be able to do that.

#VfB | #VfB1893 | #Bundesliga | #VfBBVB 0:0 (30.)

"who cares if it's slop it works code doesn't matter" isn't a good way to sell ai im producing cleaner codebases than ever because of ai now i can actually refactor everything when we find a better way of doing something before shitty code just lingered forever

These people have absolutely zero ability to say "I was wrong, y'all were right."🤷🏿‍♂️ The closest they get is "I was right then when I said you were panicking for no reason and deranged, and I'm also right now, when I'm saying what you were saying, but way too late. I alone decide when it's right."🤡

heavy wind, bluesky and frank ocean on a chilled out cyclinground. the golden combo of the fall for me

ryan singers concept of breadboarding is something in my toolkit i always grab to clarify the steuctjre of my system regarding its user experience for me it is unmatched and i am astound of how little it is used

i chose calisthenics to fix 10 years of severe sitting in front of a computer. i wake up go to the rings and do 30min of body weight training. today i started with the basics: push ups deep squats (australian) pull ups on the rings

in contrast to my early twenties where i wanted to build muscle now with 30 my goal is to be healthy. with cycling as my main hobby (won’t change with this) i have a great cardio base but jeez my body was in the online trenches too much

this worked so much better and it made me question the promises of this technology. it is and will stay an integral part of my and our development process but as it gets the things 90% right it is not enough for complex business logic. for trivial uis no even more complex ones it is great! because

the patterns are established and the probability of hitting the goal of the developer is higher i think. it has seen a lot of it already! but for new in our case even weird business logic it does not work well when it has to think about implementation details and dependencies through the app

of course TDD has it baked in that you also refactor the tests as you learn about the domain. and the agent did it but only to make the tests pass not to make the implementation correct :-)

of course i course corrected but at this point of course correction i would argue i would’ve been faster when implementing MOST of the stuff myself and let the agent take the wheel when the pathway was cleared. and only the tedious refactoring, moving code part was left. that’s what i did…

so i sat down and refactored our super naive caching system from the early days. long story short: i wrote a beautiful prompt project and worked with @briancasel.com agentos which made it much more enjoyable and a lot was done right thanks to it. my TDD approach worked! so it seemed at least…

the code looked right, the abstractions looked right, the tests passed and i thought damn this is better than me! but then i started to test the rest of the app and well, the things that should work did not work. the tests basically were passing but a lot of assertions were missing!

and the funny thing is it happened at least 20 times throughout the codebase. one might argue after 5 attempts and updating the project md file the ai should be able to do it flawlessly but after a certain ceiling the returns of optimizing diminished and just reprompting and correcting was helpful

but nonetheless we were able to refactor the whole ui in a week. this is marvellous no matter the problems

the thing that worked amazingly was transitioning from petal components to using daisy ui components as they are now the standard for phoenix apps. this was a lot of work. thanks to agentic coding we were done in a week. would’ve taken us months before. the base was even done after a few hours

what took longer was the redoing of some components and user flow as some things were not 1:1 replacements. so that’s also not the AIs fault but even then i was amazed and skeptical. it was not complicated it was just tedious. from a live action workflow of showing modals to a js way is simple

I'm beginning to suspect that a key skill in working effectively with coding agents is developing an intuition for when you don't need to closely review every line of code they produce. This feels deeply uncomfortable!

i don’t know what it is, but agentic coding feels worse since a few weeks. mainly, because i am not growing in my craft as i used to. anyone feeling the same ?

Sitting down and doing some TDD work on our caching system is much more energizing than i am willing to admint.

i was on my first in person tech conference this week. thanks to the great team of goto cph. such a beautiful community and week in copenhagen. got my signed extreme programming copy and saw a beautiful talk by @josevalim.bsky.social meeting your heroes can be magical

#VfB #FCBVfB
