We'll explore how the neuronal ER supports plasticity and memory, and how its dysfunction contributes to neurodegeneration. How does the ER sense and integrate neuronal activity? How does it shape organelle function and metabolism? So many exciting questions to explore!

This announcement is many months overdue, but I'm just as excited to finally share it. I'll be joining UT Southwestern as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and the O'Donnell Brain Institute! The Benedetti Lab opens in December 2026! 🧠🔬

Rendition of the actin cytoskeleton in cultured cells. AI assisted in post processing. The eyeballs are just there to improve the visual presentation.

Accidentally made this abomination in ImageJ this evening. I ran a max projection instead of a sum projection on a bunch of heat maps. It's not useful... but I can't stop staring at it.

Ever seen mitochondria fly around like little rockets? 🚀 When cells divide, they don't just split DNA. I made a YouTube story based on a major Nature paper, showing how cells use actin waves to shuffle their powerhouses! 🔬 Watch the video here: youtu.be/udrVh_p7kCg #FluorescenceFriday #Microscopy

This mesmerizing timelapse captures the nonstop motion inside an animal cell. Red/orange streaks are the growing ends of microtubules, tiny “highways” that can rapidly assemble and disassemble to move proteins & other molecules within the cell. 📸: Andy Moore, HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus

Created using fluorescence microscopy, this stunning image of an animal cell showcases thin, web-like fibers called vimentin — a protein that provides mechanical stability to cells and tissues, despite a single vimentin being ~7000x smaller than the width of a human hair. 📸 @aaandmoore.bsky.social

🚨The Neurocyto lab is branching out in our latest preprint! We used tubulin microinjection to directly visualize microtubule turnover in developing hippocampal neurons, demonstrating the presence of in-lattice repair and a selective stabilization in the nascent axon. Check below, or read on 🧵 1/9

I like this movie, but a friend of mine likes to complain about the obvious stitching artifacts. I'll try harder next time, Michael. Vimentin (orange) and ER (blue) in an overnight acquisition.

iPS cell-derived cardiac myocytes (heart muscle cells) typically beat about once per second, so I usually speed up the movies I post; otherwise, scrollers might miss the action. But every now and then, a cell looks like this in real time. #CellBiology

In the classical view of mitotic cell division, the spindle apparatus maintains principal control of chromosome capture and alignment. Any breakdown in spindle function can result in chromosome mis-segregation, producing daughter cells with abnormal chromosome number.
