Delegation to the President requires a majority, but retrieval a supermajority. “Congress, as a practical matter, can’t get this power back once it’s handed over to the president”. “a one-way ratchet toward the gradual but continual accretion of power in the executive branch” –Justice Gorsuch

Biden could have fairly easily passed a clear, enforceable law banning a live president's face on coins, signature on $ bills, banners on buildings, Triumphal arches, knocking down the White House, accepting 747s and all kinds of things, but: *Only* by voluntarily limiting his own power as POTUS

Aaron reposted

A whole wish-list, but realistically all of these things require a Senate super-majority The only thing that might get 60 Senators is limiting the power of the executive (for example the "national emergency" laws). Which would require a President to limit their own power. Good luck with that!!

agree, but the only way to make that happen legislatively will be some serious threats like if you want to remove renaming powers from the Executive Branch a Dem president needs to threaten to rename everything unless Congress passes a law but I doubt any President will limit their own power

B. A. Friedman@bafriedman.bsky.social

There are a lot of good arguments about what the Dems should do if they get power, but job one needs to be a drastic reduction in the powers of the Presidency (and probably SECDEF too). If you don’t do that, the game is up. The next person to abuse that power will be better at it.

By shifting power to these people we've created a private-sector bureaucracy whose job security depends both on minutiae and on keeping the project extended indefinitely

These people are a plague on western systems and a chief reason leading to governments not actually delivering on things and voters turning to right as a result. That's not to say that process should just be "I had the feelz, so we're doing X!" But it *cannot* get in the way of quickly delivering.

I wonder if private sector healthcare and health insurance admins also believe they are doing a better job at rationing health care in The Great American Way compared to the government functionaries who do it everywhere else in the world for a fraction of the cost

This wasn’t a unique opinion. Most urban planners feel this way. They actually believe they are doing a better job than their international peers because they hold more meetings.

"Putin has nothing left to play" has also been a recurring aspirational analysis. There are nearly always cards left to play, all come with a cost. Iran "cards" - GCC Energy production - GCC pipelines - Bab el-Mandeb - Undersea cables - Depleting missile defense - US Navy targets ... - CBRN

I had dinner with a friend tonight. For her job was in convos with brokers who help her co. with health insurance. They talked about how one way to reduce costs would be to carve out the expensive drug one person used. They did not know that was her. Just wild to me that employers have this power.

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

The short version is: The judge agrees he's a fugitive from Minnesota justice and he might run to Mexico. But Texas can just "investigate" the extradition request indefinitely, and release him while it "investigates". Extradition can be ignored, as long as it's never officially refused.

A federal judge in Texas has denied Minnesota's request to force Gov. Greg Abbott to hand over ICE agent Christian Castro, who is charged in the Jan. 14 shooting of Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis. The order means Castro is set to be released from jail this week. Order here. Story coming momentarily.
