SORKIN: Why lay people off at the Post? Why fire people? BEZOS: The Post needs to be a profitable enterprise that stands on its own 2 feet S: Does it? Some people say it should be a trust BEZOS: Yes. It's a measure of its relevance. If people aren't paying for our product, it's not good enough

How do of all these rich and powerful guys so painfully lack self awareness? It’s as obvious as his bald head that it was his incompetence that killed The Post! They can own just about anything in the world except their responsibility for their failures.

And yet under most newspaper models, sustainability came from selling eyeballs. Just as with social media, WE are the product. The buyer is advertiser. The subscription model was rarely what sustained newspapers. Ads did. So what exactly is his product with the Post? Us?

What a dumbass. HE is the reason people stopped paying for The Post with his dumbass changes. Just create and fund a foundation and donate The Post (like the Wikipedia model). Then walk away and let the foundation board manage it.

Basically liberal, left leaning people were the overwhelming majority of readers and subscribers. Over 70% of the people who identified the Post and the NY Times as their primary news source voted for Harris. Going MAGA Lite was not about making money it was to push pro right policies.

That is what the immoral GOP loves about him. 🤯 He steals elections 🤯 He robs the U.S. Treasury 🤯 He takes healthcare and benefits from seniors 🤯 He snatches citizenship away from Dreamers 🤯 He targets the rights of black Americans 🤯 He erases the innocence of girls

I bought your “product” for 40 fucking years you dissembling piece of shit. I ended that long-term investment after you spiked the Kamala endorsement in ‘24. Also, fuck you for calling a Pulitzer Prize-winning publication a “product,” you insensitive, ignorant Trump sycophant.

Gee Jeff, I wonder why people aren't paying for your product. I was a satisfied subscriber until you refused to run your paper's endorsement of Harris. That's when I cancelled, but the changes you've made since have also been horrific.

People bought newspapers for obits, classifieds and school lunch menus. Those have been better on the Internet now for decades. Newspapers in specific and reportage in general are not mass market services you can value by subscription revenue generated.

A strange standard: If people aren't paying for our product, it's not good enough The trump phone collected millions and did not even exist. Therefore it must have been a good product.

He’s absolutely destroyed The Post and has the nerve to blast readers? He’s the one who alienated loyal readers. He needs to bring it back to where it was politically and then he’ll be able to bring back many of those he’s laid off. He has the $$, but doesn’t care.

Pay for water, pay for knowledge, pay for air, pay for health all must profit even if you can't afford it! Also, haiku rarely rhymes... dick!

it’s true. I stopped paying for it when Bezos diminished the quality of the product by putting his thumb on editorial content and firing decent journalists. Broke my heart as it is my local newspaper

There are somethings humans make that t we all enjoy or use daily that we dont intend to make a profit off of because of its usefulness. Then there's this guy who spits at that idea and then makes working there impossible to deal with and eventually guts the whole thing to sell. All for profit.

Weird that these fing oligarchs refuse to recognize that people are tuning out from their “journalism” because they know the money is coming from Trump stooges.

Always makes my head hurt when smart (business) people are also so God damn narcissistic, willfully ignorant (and obtuse) 😒 ... UGH Bezos, you SUCK! He is going to cause the Post to die. Fuck, it's already on its last legs because of him.

It is not good enough. I was a rabid news junkie and WaPo subscriber for years. Loved it. No more. Jeff Bezos is not a force for good in this country that has given him everything. I won’t support anything he does.

The fact a greedy billionaire with no journalism experience at all fashions himself a newspaper expert, and that people clamor to interview him about it, is where we are. 🙄

The need for news to be profitable destroyed network TV news. Now it’s 3 minutes of news headlines and 27 minutes of teasers, commercials, look at this car chase or shark bite victim, look at this cute kid or animal and the weather.

Bezos is really trying to be the best orange felon's prostate massager money can buy. He must have a big request on the way. It's unimaginable how much sweeter a deal he could get than he already has.

It scares the shit out of me that people want to Amazon-ify healthcare. There’s just no way “public benefit” services are going to survive if this is the route we choose. Everything will be pay-to-use and people too sick and poor to profit the owners will just die.😢

He destroyed it because he has gone fully right-wing. Why did he wait until now to do it if profit was the main consideration? He gave Melania $40M and spent $50M on his wedding in the same time frame. I don't think money was his main reason for destroying the Post.

Today's media clowns have no idea what the product is. It was never "the news" (sorry folks). It was the eyeballs. Advertising drove profits, circulation revenue at best paid for the costs of delivery. And what brought in the eyeballs? The content -- be it news, entertainment or the advertising.

It’s not even a good business analysis. Revenue, rather than profitability, measures the demand for the product. His revenue has dropped as he’s gutted coverage and become increasingly partisan. You can’t cost cut your way into relevance and demand.

It is if people expect pay to produce it. I mean even when I worked at the Daily Illini in 90-94 we were all about maxing subscriptions. The problem isn't that news can't be profitable, the problem is engaging people at scale large enough to profit when news is so readily available for free.

Whatever story you can write that generates the most profit just go with it. Veracity is not the measure for this type of news. Why won’t some billionaire that cares about the future of our country take on the task of creating a news organization focused on accurate, unbiased, nonpartisan reporting

It's the same trap that broadcast television news fell into when decided to pivot to commercial profitability (and the production values of its entertainment division) from its former loss-leader status.

This is where the free-market religion goes off the rails. The market is driven by lizard-brain level transactions. By Jeff’s rationale Flaming Hot Cheetos and Dr. Pepper should be considered health food, because the market has determined that it’s a superior product compared to broccoli.

He can't possibly believe that by kissing Trump's ass, he can get conservatives who have spent 30 years being The Post is liberal propaganda to become subscribers. All he's doing is losing people who want a legitimate news source. His real reward comes from being in Trump's favor.

HOW TO SELL MORE SUBSCRIPTIONS 1. Axe half the newsroom and loads of other staff. 2. Recognize that 60,000 subscribers cancelled in response to firings. 3. Stand behind the cuts.

Well, the changes instituted at the Post have caused an exodus of subscribers not the reverse. So, I suspect they are more in the red now than before. If you want to actually make it profitable maybe you should not alienate your loyal core base and grow on that rather trying rebuild around some

mythical center right or right wing group of subscribers whose main information source is X or Fox News and would likely never subscribe to the Post unless you completely abandon journalistic integrity and principles.

Bezos, the Washington Post will NEVER be a profitable enterprise. You've chosen profit over integrity and community. Democracy doesn't just die in darkness, it suffocates in a sewer rupture of Predator Billionaire Class corruption. You will not like what you've unleashed in your hubris.
