Mermelstein (1967); Schroeder (1967) provided ways of estimating the vocal tract transfer transfer function from tube models by looking into the anti-symmetric Fourier coefficients of the formants for open-close tubes. 50 years hence, our most important contribution is everyone measuring #VOT 🤦

Never understood the logic of prevoicing.Only makes sense if our perspective on voicing comes from languages with 2-way contrasts. Arguably, the burst is the vantage point for laryngeal contrasts. This could easily be amended if 4-way laryngeal contrasts provided the perspective. #phonetics #voicing

#Phonetician friends, if I had to get rugged, field oriented digital recorders, head-mounted microphones and headphones - what should I be looking at? If these could easily function in a lab setting that would be a plus...

In the classical frame, institutions in their desire to competitively indulge in this spurious one-upmanship are a major obstacle to progress in #bigteamscience and #science in general. Instead of nurturing the careers of #ecrs, what requirements such as "which author are you" tend to do is:

The difficulty of measuring #intensity and the ease of measuring #duration perhaps is the reason why so many contrasts rely heavily on #duration, despite its infeasibility as a stable cue across contexts #unpopularopinion

Is it just me? Or do we all hate out-of-office (ooo) mails? Emails are impersonal, ooo mails are the epitome of that. It is saying, "I don't care who you are but hey, I am not here. I will be. At some point of time. But not now." Academics, be mindful that your ooo mail lands in students inbox also.

#phonetics folks, is there a web-based version of #praat that I can suggest to students? A majority of our students do not have access to computers/laptops and our labs have no more than 1 or 2 working machines which too are very old.

The pandemic dealt a frontal assault on whatever progress #openscience had made in #speechsciences in widening the already existing gap btwn researchers in the global north and south. Predictably, due to availability of resources global north researchers adopted proprietary tools for recording data.

If we survey the phonetics & laboratory phonology lit that came out during the pandemic using online tools, we will see 2 things: use of proprietary tools & decreasing presence of under-studied & under-resourced languages, with increasing presence of already well-endowed researchers as major actors.
