All of this to say is at least why I argue for the renaming/repurposing of the competitive player label is half the stuff that's been being talked about with player motivation and the other half is this opposite end. I feel like we could grow a lot if we didn't self-label our bubble for existing.

I really like the point of "experience the game in as many ways as you can" There's so much neuroscience that goes into that statement, but I'm not qualified to talk about it in depth

What follows is a very ranty and somewhat philosophical post so TL;DR - Experience the game in as many ways as you can - Observe, reflect, practice - Improvement takes work and play in equal doses

I’m a professional voice coach, and have performed at a high professional level in the american entertainment industry. I’ve built my skills for 25 years, and competed against my peers to do it. Some of y’all comp splatooners do not understand how building a skill works. Let’s talk about it.

there's a big misconception going around that if you play comp splatoon, your motivation is solely to improve, when that's simply not true for everyone remember that this is a social space and outlet for people as well, and some would prefer just having fun compared to the work it takes to improve

How often you choose to practice or learn is up to you, but don’t expect to improve just by doing. You won’t. The observing, reflecting, and practicing all have to happen for the skill to grow. If you only “do”, you will remain where you are. Maybe that’s ok for you! Maybe not. Your choice.

If there’s one thing to take from this, I hope it is that you try something new. Play that open level tournament. Scrim that team 5 divs below you. Play a pickup with someone in a different skill level. Play turf war for 4 hours. 1v2 your teammates. Recon mode. Don’t think you know everything.

Usually, the most fun experiences do not come when you are trying to improve. They come from doing the thing. Building a skill requires so much work, and enjoying it requires letting go of all that. Simply doing it, and enjoying the experience.

The skill to let go and enjoy “the doing” is a skill in itself, and is the most important piece of the learning puzzle. To experience the thing you are working to better, you have to accept where you are. Stop observing, stop reflecting, and just do. Burnout comes when you forget to just do.

Take: Improving should be fun. My take: Improving is one of the most rewarding and painful things you’ll ever do. You will confront your mistakes and self image, and you will conquer them. You will make the same mistakes again, and you will do the things you’ve only dreamed of doing.

If you actually want to improve your skill, you will not feel good about it the whole time. You will be frustrated and hopeless at times. You will be elated and fulfilled at times. You will not predict when these feelings come.

In general, the idea that the “best” practice is fighting people near your level is just not true. The best practice is a diversity of experience. Playing the game in many different ways to reveal and practice many different things. You cannot solve this game. You must grow the skill to win it.

SoloQ, scrim down, scrim up, pickup scrim, team scrim, scrim with newbies, scrim with high level, 8s vs your team, open level tourney, skill cap tourney, 1v1, 2v2, 2v4, 3v1, recon, salmon run, turf war, zones only. They all teach you something if you keep observing, reflecting, and practicing.

Take: “Getting rolled by high level opponents is not beneficial until you reach a certain level.” My take: Learning happens with observation, experience, and reflection. Fighting and losing to better players absolutely will reveal weakness in your game. The improvement comes with active practice.

You do *not* need to reach some arbitrary and vague skill level to start learning from losing. Study what they do differently than you. Where are the gaps in your skill? Can you notice mistakes they make? Hone your observation and grow knowledge. Then put it into practice.

Here's 47 minutes of talking about this topic and discussing many of the comments I received. Warning: not for the faint of attention spans, but I like to think it's a good listen and I wanted to give my full stance on why I've suddenly shifted so hard in favor of X rank 🔗 youtu.be/Ow-CDG6Y9B0

If you're a comp splat player of any level who firmly believes that competitive play and soloq demand significantly different skillsets, especially if you think metrics such as x power have no bearing on competitive skill level/divisions, I am genuinely curious to hear why you think that.

I told the team I'm coaching to do a X rank participation score instead of a normal XP race Their goal is to see who can play the most number of X rank matches in a season Sometimes it's not about raising an arbitrary number, but just putting in more hours when you can

You learn how your teammates play by scrimming and vodding with them. I learn how my teammate plays by fighting them 12 times sequentially in a single X rotation. We are not the same #3200mindset (I have dropped 200 points in 48 hours)

This is another reason why AI losers have gotten into retro decomp/recomp projects. Nobody wants to play AI slop games, so they have to reinforce the value of AI by producing something desirable, which in this case is just repackaging the work of actual talented people.

zagawee@zachisagardner.bsky.social

just wanted to share something i discovered the amount of games released in 2022 compared to this year has increased by 77%. I use 2022 because that marks the last year before AI really took over the internet whats crazy to me is that the amount of games with ZERO REVIEWS has ALMOST TRIPLED. ZERO?
