Help me with revisions in my book. I need a name for a downtrodden, industrial neighborhood. Winners will get an acknowledgement. The place is home to tenements and abandoned sawmills.

AI agent training today. The instructor is not selling me. CoPilot sounds like getting an assistant assigned to you. And it turns out to be the CEO's incompetent son who needs a job because he dropped out of college.

So, when you have a notion you'll just write a book and make lots of money, try this on: I'm working with real editor now and the spreadsheet I use to take all the changes and edits requested is now at 769 with two more chapters to go. One does not simply write a book.

Something I want to remind people of. Whatever disdain I have for the leadership of the Democratic Party, I want to encourage people go out and Vote Blue. This election there are a lot of good, younger candidates with ideas and the courage to act on them. The alternative is horrifying.

The SCP Foundation is huge shared universe anthology-like collection of amateur horror fiction. It is a modern version of Lovecraft's mythos. Imagine if you trained an LLM on that. Well, imagine no more. This is our life now. futurism.com/tech-industr...

Here some charts from the article I cited earlier. As I mentioned, this is why I've largely given up on the party even though I really like many of its candidates. I'm a lifelong Democrat who's donated quite a bit in the past and worked on campaigns as well as in local parties.

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

But, as the funding strategy has shifted, the party has turned away from its people. Democrats may win this cycle just because Trump & co. are so evil, but they should not count on wins in the future. I know I'm looking for better options.

Today's training in MS Copilot does not inspired confidence. Throughout the training, the instructor keeps saying "But, don't trust Copilot" and "DO NOT TRUST COPILOT". This is the instructor as opposed to me, the confirmed AI skeptic.

This is why I've given up on the Democratic Party that I used volunteer for. I first encountered the consultant class while organizing with my local party. On the one hand, the party relied on progressives to knock on doors and do person to person engagement. newrepublic.com/article/2163...

Which brings us to this election. How are Dems surging? Purely because Trump and his party are so visibly incompetent and evil. There are some younger candidates who are dodging leadership and winning campaigns by engaging with their communities.

On the other, people like us who talked to actual and real voters were completely locked out of decision making and leadership ignored us when it came to looking for new voters. Leadership turned ever more towards the consultants while drifting away from their people.

Wolverines as rescue animals. What could go wrong with that? Though I have heard their viciousness is overstated.

Wolverines can smell carrion buried under meters of snow, and now one is being trained to find people trapped in avalanches, where survival odds drop fast after 15 to 30 minutes.

Let explain one other thing: The regulators are actually the voting commissioners. Staff like me have a single duty: advise the commissioners. We may develop rate cases or make recommendations on what's allowed into tracking accounts, but the commissioners do not have to accept our work.

Startling Realization of the Day: I'm modeling how the age of an area's population affects fatalities in wildfires. Looking at the over 65 group, I just realized that's me in way too few years. Bah, they can have my multi-regression models when they pull them from cold dead hands.

Back from vacation so the cat pictures will resume. Someday, I will post about my upcoming book. But I've still got a lot of editing to do.

The previous pictures are from a short vacation the missus and I took up the coast from our home home in LA. If you want to see a different California from the cities, get up to Morro Bay. It's a lovely spot with excellent adventures all around. Be sure to get out on one of the whale watching tours.

I occasionally take pictures of things other than cats. Here's an otter at Morro Bay. You really otter see them. By the way, did you know I'm one of the leading experts of the economics of sea otters?

I'll weigh in briefly on RFK's gift disclosure scandal. I'm a somewhat senior regulatory analyst in my day job. It's the main reason I use a pen name, actually. I can't accept so much as a sandwich from an entity which could become a party to a proceeding.

As a civil servant a great deal of my life is not allowed to be private. It's tough to overestimate the degree of scrutiny even rank and file staff like me face.

Given that RFK has accepted large book advances, taken free flights to very nice places and more, is he corrupt? To a large extent it does not matter. The mere appearance of corruption is indistinguishable from the real thing.

Were I to go much higher, my writing would become entirely a hobby; I don't think I could have a second income. I might even have to clear anything I write. My investments are tricky since I hold individual stocks. My investment portfolio is discoverable at my level.

Since I'm in the thick of regulatory proceedings at the day job and editing my forthcoming novel evenings, here's a cat picture to tide you all over. This is how you know I'm not an AI bot.

The article is definitely worth reading. What stands out to me is how the LLM was apparently trained in the shallowest of New Age chatrooms and reddits. I had a roommate who was into that kind of thing and the LLM sounded a lot like that dude. LLMs like chatGPT are really uncanny myna birds

I've been working with a real and professional editor for the book I'm currently finishing. The surprising thing about this experience is how little I need to change and rewrite. The last time I could only afford what amounted to proofing. This time I have the full package.

And it's daunting because this one is a pro with deep contacts in the publishing world. They think I can go pro with my writing. Which is not what I was expecting. I will probably self-publish again. But I'm going to try the agent and publisher route with my next works.
