I've been terrible at social media for the past 8 months or so, since breaking a pretty long-term and stubborn habit. I mean, the urge to post mundane things about my own life is sorta still here but...where do you even start when the world is burning?

Ok, I'll try. Today is the Equinox. My dog and I saw a long-billed curlew and two black oystercatchers at the beach this morning, just after low tide. My daughter got into an amazing university. It's prom night. I'm loved and happy.

It can feel like we have no right to joy right now, but it's important to remember that joy wherever you can get it is a terrifically righteous act. "Think higher, feel deeper," right? (Elie Wiesel, of course).

It is quite telling that since the horrific story of Cesar Chavez re: sexual abuse broke earlier this week and calls to change the names of schools and other public spaces named in his honor, not one conservative voice has stepped forward to object that this would be tantamount to erasing history.

This is the second account - the first being in Chicago - of DHS agents mass detaining people and then *sorting them by race*.

Joe Robertson@joro.bsky.social

More than 400 people, including hundreds of citizens, were “sorted” at gun point into racial and ethnic groups by 200 ICE agents who fired flash-bang grenades into cars with people inside, pointed guns at children & demanded their zip tied parents not comfort them. apple.news/Ausdx6kWtT0e...

The Republican position now appears to be that you have a constitutional right to openly carry a gun in public, unless you do so while expressing a view that the government dislikes, in which case the secret police can shoot you to death on the spot.

Joshua J. Friedman@joshuajfriedman.com

Minneapolis police chief Brian O'Hara says that the victim was a 37-year-old white man and US citizen with no criminal record and that he was a legally permitted gun owner.

I don’t want to hear anything from an elected official unless it’s a plan to defund the DHS and impeach Noem, Bovino, etc. No texts. No emails. No talk about the economy. Step up or step off.

Apparently I'm not the only one whose pharmacy is out; hear it's a much larger shortage of estradiol patches nationwide. I do not think the world is ready for us all to hit that moment at once. Or maybe given the events in Minnesota it's perfect timing to unleash the Kraken of our bottomless rage.

18 year old just had a sleepover with two friends where they couldn't wait to get here and...bake an apple pie from scratch, eat it, and go to sleep. I'm always here to counteract the narrative that teenagers are terrible and only ever look at their phones instead of hanging out "like we did."

Same kid who told her friends specifically to please not bring any alcohol to her 18th birthday party (no we didn't chaperone). Same kid who writes real letters (sealed with wax) to pen pals around the world. Same charming, activist kid. Her and her friends are the future and I'm here for it!

People used to talk over me alllll the time, or I'd never get a word in edgewise... but since perimenopause I have caught myself becoming an interrupter, instead; I just start talking. And I don't much care for that, either. 54 and still learning how to be.

ICYMI yesterday: Newsom: He is a failed president. Who else sends ICE at the same time while having a conversation like this? Someone who is weak, broken. His weakness is masquerading as a strength. The most unpopular president in modern history.

It is fucking insane that we had a decade of people complaining about the dangers of cancel culture, and now literally hundreds of thousands of people are being purged from government jobs for ideological reasons, but that is not cancel culture.

I'm not going to sugar coat. I'm 54 next month. It's awesome to be here able to say I feel more accomplished and proud and together than ever, and ALSO that I rise in the morning looking like Bill the Cat in a flop sweat, wanting to smash things, angry, maybe even at you. And it's FREAKING HARD.

And indeed, you really cannot help but feel that if such a transition of life was as strong for men as it is for women, they'd have complained about it a lot more in the halls of medicine that drive advancement and help us live longer and more productive and satisfied lives.

But also you can't flag, you can't complain, you just have to integrate or fear your loss of "utility" to others. Maybe take some hormones, maybe it helps some, but like, even getting that right is a new project to nurture and manage and it still isn't enough.
