I like trains, bikes, mini trucks, native landscapes, trains again and hate cars and capitalism. Also I have some low quality YouTube videos of biking and trains so...yeah

If commercial flights or trains killed 7,000 bystanders a year, the entire industry would be halted immediately. Because it's cars, the government just shrugs and lets them build the hoods higher.

A UK study found that telling potential SUV buyers that those vehicles directly result in higher fatalities for pedestrians, cyclists and children had zero effect on their decision to buy them. What does work? Financial penalties: Increased fees, taxes, parking. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/j...

Living without a car in much of America sucks. Given that, there are two options: 1. Give everyone a car (which will increase traffic and emissions) 2. Make it suck less to get around without a car (which will decrease traffic and emissions) I don't know about you, but #2 seems better.

The War on Cars@thewaroncars.bsky.social

Nobody disputes that having access to a car in a car-dominated society is good. It gives one access to jobs, healthcare, food, education, social opportunities and more. All we're asking is for people to go one step deeper and ask why access to such basic rights requires buying and operating a car.

Transportation shouldn't default to being stressful. Highways are one thing, but our cities can be different. Urban areas should be designed like our homes: nurturing, protective, and comfortable for everyone inside them. Designing for cars will never achieve that goal.

"But what about (straw-man concern)..." There's a mobility device for every age and every level of ability. What our cities need is the infrastructure to enable this freedom of independent mobility. Full stop.

Medieval city centres are nice and all, but they don’t feel relatable to lots of people in North America. I want to see more stories and examples from European suburbs like this.

Many people are safe streets advocates, not because they had a fantastic trip to Europe, but because our car culture has had life-altering consequences for them here at home. Remember that.

“So much of urban planning is organised around a guy getting to work as quickly as possible. That's the worldview. The only time I care about the city is when I'm in my car and need to get to work as fast as possible. Looking through that lens is so incredibly toxic.” LISTEN: youtu.be/hUR3rmr845s

"We don't have room for those things!" You always do. Just look under the cars.

Richards Street in Vancouver has four rows of street trees. This is only possible because the City repurposed space that is usually reserved for cars.

Note Dame just passed a blanket ban on all ebike use on their campus, including the streets. This is what ignorant policy looks like and I hope it doesn't spread

All car parking should be like this.

Engineer Like A Girl@engineerlikeagirl.bsky.social

I had an opportunity to (not) use the worst local supermarket cycle parking today... For a laugh I did actually attempt to park my e-cycle in this and nearly killed myself in the process. I did have a friendly chat with customer services about it...

Today's ignorant naysayers claim "that'd never work here!" when in fact it once did before it was intentionally dismantled for the benefit of the auto industry.

One side obsession from my research into the 1920s is the extensive network of ELECTRIC trains that used to connect cities and towns across the central Midwest called the Interurban. We had this more than a hundred years ago. The things we had and the things we lost.

As we discussed with researchers at ASU in a recent episode, there's a hidden desire among many Americans to live car-free or car-lite and a lot of it has to do with previous experience with and exposure to car-free living. thewaroncars.org/2026/03/10/e...

Conrad Hackett@conradhackett.bsky.social

Most Americans would rather live in a big house in a car-based community than a small house in a walking-based community. https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2026/03/19/majority-of-americans-prefer-spread-out-communities-with-big-houses/

It's so funny. "The USPS losses money" So does the federal highway commission. But we all understand that if we didn't invest money in this you couldn't drive anywhere. But for some reason we've let shithead delivery companies convince you otherwise.

It’s wild that infrastructure is assumed to mean massive accommodations for 4-ton vehicles that damage roads, while parking for a cargo bike is treated as a niche request. We are effectively subsidizing the thing that costs the city the most money, while squeezing out the tool that actually scales.

Snow is nature's urban planner: It can show us what parts of the roadway drivers don't use — and what can be reclaimed for pedestrians. Post your photos and videos of all the #sneckdowns you see and tag us and @mayor.nyc.gov so today's winter wonderland can inspire better streets year-round!

“Two billion autonomous cars would continue to sprawl around us, drain our wallets, pollute our cities and limit our freedoms. They distract from meaningful progress, making cities walkable, livable and improving transit. In foregrounding them we continue our bondage to the car-industrial complex.”

Despite what we are often told, this line from Mamdani’s inauguration speech is what true pragmatism actually looks like: “Beginning today, we will govern expansively and audaciously. We may not always succeed. But never will we be accused of lacking the courage to try.”

More people will ride in winter weather when they know their commute will be efficient. Sure, the protected bike lanes enable a lot of people, but the friction caused by dealing with cars at every intersection keeps many from utilizing the bicycle in winter. Fix the chaos of cars and induce demand.

Streetsblog Chicago@chi.streetsblog.org

"Why is Chicago building protected bike lanes? Nobody rides in them 6 months a year when it's cold here." Here's what we saw in the downtown Dearborn Street PBLs during a 4-minute bike ride on Wednesday 12/10 around 4 PM (not peak rush hour), when it was about 32F.

I wish every single article on gerrymandering would include this disclaimer: “This is a unique aspect of the American political system. Most other countries don’t allow politicians to draw electoral maps. Many even go further with proportional representation to ensure outcomes match votes.”

Ari Berman@ariberman.bsky.social

Indiana state house Republicans just approved a new 9-0 gerrymandered map ousting two US House Democrats, giving Republicans 100% of seats in state where Trump got 58% of vote
