The last few years have felt like living through the interwar period: the pandemic that wouldn’t end, the facism, the rising racism, the rollbacks on change’s to women and girls’ rights, the ecological crisis the populist demagoguery - and I would like this timeline to end, thank you very much.

Birth control and abortion are way more accessible than they were when I was young, and people don’t die from AIDS. We owe much of this to feminist and queer activists. 👊

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

The fetishisation of "debate" as some sort of grand public good that everyone should do is so thoughtless and jarring to me because the more you actually do it the more it becomes apparent that genuinely constructive debate is actually a pretty niche thing.

Water is life, and life is not negotiable. Neither are Indigenous rights. As the Liberal government tries to deny the basic human right to water, undermine Constitutional rights and eliminate critical environmental protections... (1/2)

Anyway, yall know all this stuff. The real point is that we all know this stuff but they keep making this AI thing that pretends we don’t know this stuff. the word for that is power.

Technology enthusiasts severely overestimate the average person’s desire or willingness or capacity to build and use AI agents. I understand some work roles that could mandate or encourage it but that is no way a tech revolution. Agents are best for structured, clearly delineated tasks.

When Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government proposed overhauling environmental assessments and major project approvals last spring, they were warned against centralizing power and infringing on Indigenous Rights. Critics say Bill C-39 does just that.

Thinks we shouldn’t underestimate the extent of ecological crisis in the interwar period & the extent to which it conditioned the emergence of facism in those years.

There is a lot to say here, and one of them is how easy it is to disappear Indigenous peoples and histories from national narratives & how available the language race, national, and empire remains.

BREAKING! "Saddle Lake Cree Nation is asserting its Treaty rights and jurisdiction to provide safe refuge for those seeking and providing gender-affirming care. Any Albertan will be able to access gender-affirming care on Saddle Lake Cree Nation reserved lands and territories"

Colonial naming and renaming is and always has been nonsensical and self-aggrandizing. Pointing out that Trump’s renamings are absurd doesn’t address the extent they breathe life into an old powerful colonial act.

This thread right here.

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

Small town BC liquor store. Clerk looks at what I’ve chosen and I mutter that I’m only buying wine from Summerland and she says, I know. Watching these places burn every damn summer is just so much.

It’s a problem for a lot of people, myself included. I’ve bought kids rainwear, random housewares & food there over the years.

A lot of Winnipeggers may shrug, but the end of Giant Tiger’s downtown store is a giant problem for many of the people living in the centre of the city.

Par example: I went somewhere that rhymes with Heck, decided I didn’t want to pay $200, walked down the street to GT, told clerk that I needed rain gear for a kid going to camp, she said “I’m from Northwestern Ontario, this is what you need” & handed me a $20 set of rain gear. RIP Downtown GT.

Every ridiculous storm leaves me feeling hungover the next day, as we wade through downed trees and power outages. I know this is one moment in a long history of colonialsim’s climate impact - thank you @mediaindigena.bsky.social’s BFF series - but hoo boy, it is a loud & destructive one.
