Thanks to @windspeaker.bsky.social for interviewing @niigaanwewidam.bsky.social and I about our new book Truth Before Reconciliation: Confronting Residential School Denialism 👇

“I think it's because #denialism is something that a lot of Canadians encounter, but they don't know how to respond to it. And they want someone to stand up to these folks.” #Indigenous #FirstNations #Canada #residentialschools

.@niigaanwewidam.bsky.social and I have a new op-ed out today in the Calgary Harold, reflecting on last week's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We argue that we must confront the rise of residential school denialism but we can't let it distract us: calgaryherald.com/opinion/colu...

calgaryherald.comOpinion: Don’t let denialism distract from truth and reconciliation progressOpinion: Don’t let denialism distract from truth and reconciliation progress

The difference between something feeling like "one step forwards, two steps back" but actually being "two steps forward, one step back"....is progress. We should not lose sight of that.

Given recent events, @niigaanwewidam.bsky.social and I worked with Canadian Dimension to publish an excerpt of Truth Before Reconciliation’s conclusion - to help meet the moment and keep us focused on putting truth before reconciliation 👇

@seancarleton.bsky.social and @niigaanwewidam.bsky.social’s new edited collection confronts the growing presence of harmful and disrespectful residential school denialism in mainstream media and public discourse. Read more of their writing in Canadian Dimension here:

Canada's white nationalists are parroting racist, anti-Indigenous talking points that right-wing politicians and media have been normalizing. Second Sons Canada, the fascist fight club, demonstrated on Tk̓emlúps lands over the weekend with a banner that read “got bones?” Here’s how we got here:

Today, September 26, marks the end of the Mohawk Resistance of 1990. But, the land struggle at the heart of that movement - a struggle that had been raging in Kanehsatà꞉ke for 270 years - continues today, as my friend Ellen Gabriel always makes clear.

That's why Ellen and I wrote When the Pine Needles Fall - to amplify Ellen's voice and perspective, but also to make connections to what's happening today, in Kanehsatà꞉ke and around the world, and to inspire hope and resistance for a better future for all

.@niigaanwewidam.bsky.social and I will be on CBC airwaves tomorrow. Listen to: Qulliq: Iqaluit (Nunavut); Weekend AM (Newfoundland); Weekender (Yukon/NWT); North by Northwest (BC); All in a Weekend (Montreal) Saskatchewan Weekend; In Town & Out (Ottawa); Fresh Air (Toronto).

We hope the book can help confront residential school denialism for as long as it takes for truth to win over hate. As well, because we're donating the royalties to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society, the book's incredible success directly supports Survivors

Thanks to everyone’s support, including denialists who keep buying the book to take pictures burning it etc., Truth Before Reconciliation is a McNally Robinson Booksellers #1 bestseller this week. Thank you!

I mean, right-wingers wanting to burn books they don't like is very on brand. *Note: this is an altered image this goofball made. As a community member said, I guess this means the book is sparking a lot of interest....

What a wonderful evening and book launch for Truth Before Reconciliation last night in Winnipeg, bringing the community together to honour Survivors and confront residential school denialism.

Niigaan Sinclair has two books on Winnipeg’s best sellers list this week, including Truth Before Reconciliation, which combats those spreading misinformation about residential schools. He says the book is already creating a stir. Truth & Politics: youtu.be/PbaM59QUE5c

Niigaan and I and our contributors are very thankful to CBC Books for naming Truth Before Reconciliation: Confronting Residential School Denialism to its list of nonfiction books to read this fall!

Most peer-reviewed, expert, university press books to get this kind of support - so we are extremely grateful. We hope this can help more people find their way to truth, not denialism, misinformation, and hate.

Today is the official release of Truth Before Reconciliation: Confronting Residential School Denialism! It is an honour to be a part of this publication, joining the voices of those working toward sharing and defending the truths of residential schools and Survivors. (1/3)

With the recent rise of anti-Indigenous racism and hate, we felt that a peer-reviewed collection of expert voices was needed to confront denialism and stand up for Survivors and the truth about residential schooling. Royalties are being donated to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society.
