This is one of my favorite optical illusions, because even when you know specifically HOW IT WORKS, it's still hard to make your brain believe it. The image below is real-world video, but you're being tricked into believing it's an elaborate miniature by the DIORAMA EFFECT. Let's talk about it.

(Mathematical art, I guess.) Phase-shifting the Fourier transform of a regular 14-gon. Or equivalently: seven plane waves meeting at equal angles.

Great article - I remember reading in Newton's biography that he stuck a blunt-end knitting needle between his eyeball and the bone so he could press the back of his eyeball and see colours. He clearly didn't have any students at that point in his career 🙂

I wrote a post about how cool it is that scientists in the 1800s figured out that our color vision must arise from three types of cells just using clever behavioral experiments (a century before we recorded from the cones in the eye!) adiatelic.substack.com/p/history-of... #neuroskyence #SciComm 🧪

The rod:cone ratio in mice is 33:1, in humans (outside the foveola) is 15:1, but is 1:7 in the 13-lined ground squirrel (13LGS). How is this dramatic shift in the rod:cone ratio achieved?/2

Ooh great paper! Wonder why (rat) mPFC here doesn't contain irrelevant stimulus info ('early selection') but (monkey) PFC in the Mante-Sussillo style task has both ('late selection'). Reminds me of this reply by Flesch et al, discussing differences in irrelevant stimulus info in fMRI vs monkey PFC.

If I may shamelessly plug my own work, here's a model (fig 5) and rat data in which we show that PFC controls context depent dynamics in A1 through top down gain modulation www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Awesome work from the Runyan lab!

Check out our new paper, that reveals both the striking generality of cortical circuit organization, but also what we think are key differences in the scales of local excitatory and inhibitory networks across cortical areas. www.jneurosci.org/content/45/1...

Super proud of this work and as I finish up my #PhD studies I am actively looking for a #postdoc position. I am interested in studying learning and value-based decision making and how cortical and subcortical areas contribute to complex behavior tinyurl.com/LesionsOfM1 #neuroskyence

In an effort to bring #neuroskyence to @bsky.app I wanted to share our recent paper in Neuron tinyurl.com/LesionsOfM1 @markolas.bsky.social and I asked what forelimb M1 contributes to striatal and behavioral dynamics using joystick tasks and CFA lesions @cmuscience.bsky.social @the-cnbc.bsky.social

Really proud and excited to share the final version of our paper, co-led by the Bluesky-less Munib Hasnain!! We asked whether cognitive and motor neural dynamics can be isolated from one another, or whether they’re driven by common neural mechanisms 1/n www.nature.com/articles/s41...

It's finally out! Visual experience orthogonalizes visual cortical responses Training in a visual task changes V1 tuning curves in odd ways. This effect is explained by a simple convex transformation. It orthogonalizes the population, making it easier to decode. 10.1016/j.celrep.2025.115235

Awesome new paper from our groups led by the amazing Dr. Emily Oby!

Amy Orsborn@neuroamyo.bsky.social

Is our brain infinitely flexible or constrained? Oby & colleagues cleverly uses BCIs to test what cortical activity can/can't be generated quickly. Highly recommend! www.nature.com/articles/s41... And you can get a tl;dr + my takes on why this is exciting here: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
