I do think one thing that is overlooked in YCSE discourse is that Holmes is less than a month away from prison the first half of the film. You’re not seeing her as the person running Theranos; you are seeing her as someone facing 11 years in prison and possibly disassociating as she faces that fact

Biden called people laughing at wildly racist jokes “garbage” and was hounded into an apology. Trump basically says “what do you think Marshall is? A cheap jew?” and this will largely do unreported

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump says the press smeared Roger Marshall as "a shylock type guy"

Just a degenerate country. We elected this fucking asshole President. Tens of millions of Americans saw this decrepit rapist with dogshit for brains and thought he belonged in the highest office in the land.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "You go up to Minnesota -- number one place in the entire country for the sale of Mercedes-Benz. And Somalians are buying them. They come here with low IQs and no money and they get rich. Do we feel stupid? Our fraud division is getting them all."

Just imagining Kalshi in 1789, degenerate nobles betting on whether the Bastille falls, who gets beheaded

🇫🇷 FRENCH UNREST. LE PEN HITS RECORD HIGH ON KALSHI. Following a weekend of unrest in France, Kalshi prices Marine Le Pen at an all-time high of 49% in the presidential race. Far-left Jean-Luc Mélenchon stands at just 9.2%. 📊 Watch the odds move in real time 👇

I think people should listen to what the administration trying to bring back spectacle lynchings, race riots, and middle passage-esque deportation voyages are trying to tell you about themselves. bsky.app/profile/bren...

The news just since I left work: -A planned livestream of an execution by firing squad -Trump basically trying to incite a pogrom against Somalis Nothing mysterious or complicated about what's happening.

Really seems like those two goals are in tension with each other

TSA says it is removing chairs at document checks in airports, requiring staff to stand for their shift. TSA explained the reason as twofold: to ensure its employees meet its fitness standards and to create an amiable environment for travelers.

Just looking at the fiction pulitzer, 4 of the last ten years had a white male winner, including the most recent winner, who wrote a book about religion and war, two topics conservatives obsess about. Not only is the argument silly to begin with, it isnt even factually true.

Maris Kreizman@maris.bsky.social

LOL, the gotcha part in the second paragraph is truly hilarious. Who will think of the straight white rightwing men in the literary world? WHO? WHO?

77 million people voted for this shit

Trump: Electric is a heavier form of propulsion. If you get a little leak and the water starts coming in the boat, do you get electrocuted? If I'm in an electric boat, and the water is pouring in, but 5 yards away there's sharks, do I take the electrocution or sharks? I'll take the electrocution

This is the whole thing and all any Dem candidate needs to say. Just say that “the transgender community are people trying to live their lives. The GOP has decided to make them a target because they have no answers on the issues that actually matter to people.” No need for anything more.

I was a teacher on 9/11, teaching US History to 8th graders in NJ. In the morning we had a few kids leave early, but it didn’t alarm me. Then the custodian came to my classroom and handed me a memo from the principal explaining about the attacks and asking us not to say anything to the students.

My initial reaction was that this was some kind of messed up safety drill. Then I turned on my computer and tried to talk about the Columbian Exchange and not totally dissociate. Just a surreal day, a surreal time.

I think this misunderstands the purpose of admissions, which is not to slot the highest “merit” students at the top universities, then the next tier of “merit” at the next universities, etc, but to build academic communities that meet the university’s values.

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

If I was advising some centrist Dem presidential hopeful I think a good triangulatory issue for them is some huge higher ed reform like overhauling the college admission system. Propose banning all non-merit-based admission requirements and replacing with new standards-based exam to replace SAT/ACT

This also adopts a view of the function of the university that misunderstands their purpose. Universities don’t exist to be a heuristic of merit for prospective employers, or to provide job skills, they exist to bring diverse talents and learners together.

Princeton does not want to just be the top 2000 gpas and sat scores. They don’t need a music department that consists only of students who could score above 780 on SAT math, nor would they want a mathematics department that only includes students highly proficient in English.

I think this misunderstands the purpose of admissions, which is not to slot the highest “merit” students at the top universities, then the next tier of “merit” at the next universities, etc, but to build academic communities that meet the university’s values.

As a parent going through the process, I wish it were the former, it would make things much easier and more predictable, but that’s not what the admissions office is trying to do.

It would really behoove the Dems to make consumer protection a core part of their messaging. Arbitration clauses, class action bars, scam phone calls, phony supplements, take it all on; it would make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

I think MAHA is very straightforwardly the triumph of the snake oil salesmen and the way we beat it is the same way you always beat snake oil salesmen: regulate their claims

I had a roommate in college who was a sleep-talker. One time, unbeknownst to me, he had been watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Later that night, in the middle of his sleep, he sat almost bolt upright and said “We are going to die” and immediately fell back asleep. It was weird.

ceej@ceej.online

My wife, a prodigious sleep-talker, failed to disclose her affliction when we started dating, which led to the fright of my life the night she sat bolt upright in bed and in a low flat monotone loudly declared that “THIRTEEN BABIES REMAIN UNFATHERED.”

That Ben Sasse is comfortable appearing in public, much less offering his opinions in major media platforms, is a real condemnation of our society

Nathan Kalman-Lamb@nkalamb.bsky.social

Yet, Ben Sasse and the @wsj.com seem to think that it is appropriate to double down on sacrificing American boys to the death sentence that is this sport. www.wsj.com/opinion/free...

Again, this is the President of the United States. That our President is completely unfit for office, in every way imaginable, is the only story worth reporting. It’s one of the greatest crises our country has faced, and anyone who suggests any different is trying to profit off this situation.

Ron Filipkowski@ronfilipkowski.bsky.social

This person is unwell.

This Piker nonsense is like the old Farrakhan nonsense. The right has to inflate some nobody to counterbalance their collection of ghouls. You don’t have to play into it. But, there is no party discipline in the DNC, so if some leaders are being pressured to speak out on Piker, they will.

There are so many stupid people in this country and, unfortunately, they have decided to make that everyone’s problem.

Rodger Sherman@rodger.bsky.social

LMAOOOOOOOOOO somebody finally asked the transphobes if they know any WNBA players besides and NOPE

How the Democrat stance on this became “this is normal discourse,” as opposed to “this is stuff weirdos say to have an excuse to peek at your kids genitals,” I will never understand.

Nearly all of these guys (and they’re pretty much all guys) went through the experience of getting into their dream college and then being isolated by their general off-puttingness and it has defined their outlook for the rest of their lives.

Marc Elias@marcelias.bsky.social

Ross Douthat lives in...Connecticut. To be fair, I haven't been there recently, but did I miss its "civic and educational collapse?"

All this bullshit about “woke” is just “I got into an elite college and then everyone treated me like I was weird.” There’s also “I sent my kid to college and then they came back and questioned me.”

Tolerating this kind of stupidity in our government is so damaging. This is total brain rot fiction and not being able to call it out, or treating Ron Johnson like he is owed any respect, is not something we can permit. We need to have some basic shared reality to function.

The Constitutional Crisis started in 2000. You've been living through it your entire adult life. The reason politics feels hopeless is by design — conservatives broke our democratic form of government to guarantee that the people cannot act against them and are continuing to break it.

President Trump’s UFC fight on Sunday appeared to offer everything a young American man could want: fighter-jets, pyrotechnics and Octagon girls. But would this masculine spectacle help young men to forgive and forget their growing disappointment with Trump?
