The @newsguild.org is now starting the process of filing for a union election with the National Labor Relations Board. With 95% support in our newsroom, we're confident we'll successfully vote to unionize as soon as our NLRB vote is scheduled ✊🗞

Today we learned USA Today has rejected our request for voluntarily recognition of the Arizona Daily Star's union. Though we were hopeful, we're not surprised by management's response. 🧵

While the Star is locally profitable, averaging $8.5 million in annual net income over the past decade, our staff has suffered from stagnant or declining wages and repeated layoffs that have shrunk our newsroom to a skeleton crew.

We’re hopeful USA Today management will demonstrate they value local news and voluntarily recognize our union. If they refuse, our journalists will remain united and successfully vote to unionize through the National Labor Relations Board process.

You are up to date.
